'How I Met Your Mother' recap: Happy Desperation Day

    February 14, 2011 | 10:52 pm

This week's Valentine's Day episode found the show's couples in less than blissful states, but -- spoiler alert! -- it all worked out.

Ted (Jason Segel) and Zoey (Jennifer Morrison): So baking cookies = booty call, apparently. At least that's what the gang thought when Ted told them Zoey had invited him over for a quiet evening at her place to bake cookies. He packed an overnight bag, which freaked Zoey out. And then Ted took a page out of Robin's (Cobie Smulders) book and freaked out when she told him she was “ready for the long haul.” It was all getting a little too serious very quickly, so Ted ran off to Minnesota to “help” Marshall (Jason Segel).

Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Marshall: With her other half still in Minnesota, Lily was anthropomorphizing a body pillow to fill the loneliness. Cute touch taking the nickname Marshmellow and twisting into Marshpillow. Lily decided to surprise Marshall for Valentine's Day and fly to Minnesota, but it was she who got the surprise. Marshall wasn't so much helping his mom as he was regressing to kid. It's kind of amazing how a guy as big as Jason Segel manages to embody the spirit of a young boy, yelling for chocolate milk and playing Super Mario Kart for 14 hours a day. It wasn't until he told Ted that he had to go back to New York and face reality with Zoey that he realized he was hiding out from his own life.

Without his dad, “I can't see where I'm going. I can't see anything,” he said. So he yelled for his mom to make some crustless PB&J sandwiches for the road before manning up and asking for crusts. He made it back to New York to surprise Lily and continue their Valentine's Day tradition of watching “Predator.” The question now is, will Marshall and Lily get back on the baby train so soon after his father's death? I think it could go either way. He could be too upset or he could want to continue the line of Eriksons. And will this be the event that makes Marshall reevaluate his life and change career paths?

Ted and Zoey Part 2: Marshall saved the couple again. Although his mom didn't really need his help anymore, he was able to help Ted come to his senses and go back to New York. This time, Zoey brought the overnight bag. And I'm still finding it hard to get invested in this relationship.

Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) and Robin: While not a couple, these two did spend most of Feb. 13, which Barney dubbed Desperation Day, together. Plus, they have a romantic history – “This is Barney, a high-functioning sociopath and my ex,” is how Robin introduces him to her coworkers – and work together well as friends, so I often think of them as a pair. Plus, let's face it – Nora is kind of Robin lite. They're both intelligent, strong women with dark hair who see through Barney, except Nora is not wise to the fun of laser tag. So while it was very sweet and cool of Robin to set Barney up on his first Valentine's Day, I was hoping for “Zip, Zip, Zip” the sequel after hearing that Robin was Barney's laser tag partner. But hopefully, Nora will bring out a side of Barney we haven't seen before and make him grow up a little and realize a relationship – with Robin, cough, cough – is for him. As fun as Barney the womanizer is, watching a character remain stagnant and not evolve is not something I'm interested in.

    Other favorite moments:
    – The brilliant cut from Marshall and Lily talking about “Predator” to Barney scoping out the bar in “Predator” clicking noise and heat vision mode.
    – The Roman numeral expressions – “Perfect X,” “High V” -- in Barney's Desperation Day flashback to ancient Rome. I also loved Robin, looking absolutely gorgeous, as a “fifteen and still unmarried” woe-is-me bridesmaid.
    – The reveal that Marshall saw “Sleepless in Seattle” in the theater five times. By himself.
    – Anything regressive Marshall, Marshall and his dad, or Marshpillow related. Jason Segel, you so deserve these recent episodes.

Readers, what did you think of “HIMYM's” Valentine's Day offering? Are you glad Marshall and Lily are together again? Did you like Nora? Or would you rather Barney play laser tag with Robin?

I thought that too much of the Zoey/Ted interaction in this episode happened off screen :-( The show cannot build up interest in this couple if we don't see them together more. I'm slowly losing hope that this couple will make it past this season

Review: 'How I Met Your Mother' - 'Desperation Day': If it bleeds, we can kill it

By Alan Sepinwall - The show goes 2-for-3 on Valentine's Day stories

    Tuesday, Feb 15, 2011 8:25 AM

A review of last night's "How I Met Your Mother" coming up just as soon as I have a sick Dr. Mario run...

"HIMYM" doesn't have a perfect track record with holiday episodes (this season's Halloween episode, to name one, was a low point), but the series often seems to rise to the occasion, and "Desperation Day" was - other than some shaky Ted/Zoey moments - a fine example of that.

There are times when the show tries to force a catchphrase and/or Barney theory, but Desperation Day seemed such a natural extension of his character that I'm surprised we didn't get it 3 or 4 years ago. Neil Patrick Harris acting like the Predator? Excellent. That story also had the first effective Barney history lesson in quite a while, thanks to the Roman numeral jokes and Cobie Smulders affecting a terrible English accent (as a comment on how most costume dramas set in ancient Rome feature clasically-trained Brits being very British). And the conclusion to that story not only gave NPH a chance to do the petulant little boy thing he does so well ("You like her! You think she smells like rain!") but also acknowledged that Barney has grown in some ways over the years. If they did this plot 3 or 4 seasons ago, he just goes home with the silver medal-winning gymnast, where here he seems genuinely interested in Nora.

Lily and Marshall's story, meanwhile, was one of the best involving those two in a very long time. I've been affected by parts of the story about Marvin's death, but not necessarily by any one episode as a whole (and I know I'm in the minority when it comes to the funeral episode), but I thought all of this worked, both comedically (the clothed body pillow, Jason Segel busting out his own pouty little kid voice, Marshall deciding the way to manhood is to leave the crusts on) and emotionally, first with Lily leaving Minnesota, then Marshall explaining his fears to Ted and finally, especially, Marshall imagining some fatherly wisdom from Marvin on the long, cold drive to New York. A really lovely scene between Segel and Bill Fagerbakke.

Ted and Zoey, on the other hand? Meh. I liked how it tied into the Marshall story - Marshall needed another regressing boy to confess his fears to, I think, and Ted's astonished, "You have Super Mario Kart?" was one of the episode's bigger laughs - but didn't like the reason he went there. Ted is Mr. Over-Investment - remember that the series pilot climaxes with Ted freaking Robin out by being way too into her way too quickly - and while I can see how this particular circumstance might unnerve him a little, it seemed too big a reversal of his character for him to panic this much. Ted is the guy who would love it if his new girlfriend started talking about how they'll always remember their first Valentine's Day together. I liked the earlier stuff with the gang teaching Ted about booty calls and overnight bags, but it felt like the writers wanted to do that reversal but didn't know quite how to make it work.

Also on the plus side for the episode: Artemis from "Always Sunny" as one of Robin's new co-workers. And one of the guys she and her friend went home with was red-faced Buy More extra Fernando from "Chuck." That guy gets around!

    What did everybody else think?

'How I Met Your Mother': Are Marshall and Lily stealing the show?

    by Sandra Gonzalez

How-Mother-DesperationThere was so much to love on last night’s Desperation/Valentine’s Day episode of How I Met Your Mother. For one, we welcomed Barney’s new squeeze, played by Nazanin Boniadi of General Hospital. And what’s not to love about her? She made Barney question his Desperation Day theory and played freaking laser tag. Laser tag — the only quicker way to Barney Stinson’s heart than claiming to be an aerobics instructor with daddy issues. In sum: She was legen– wait, that’s really over now, right? Ok, I liked her, and I loved Barney’s reaction of adorable thanks when he realized that Robin had set him up.

We also saw Ted and Zoey move on to a new stage of their relationship; it involved overnight bags. Wink, wink.

But the highlight of the evening, as has been the case in many recent episodes, was the Lily and Marshall storyline that found Marshall in Minnesota “helping” his mother cope with the death of his father in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day. Lily missed him dearly (welcome, Marshpillow) and decided to go be with him so they could watch Predator — a tradition. What she found was a regressed Marshall. A video game-playing shlub who needed his mom to bring him milk with curly straws and buy him new batteries for his Game Boy. (Oh, little grey box of outdated technology, how I still love thee.) He claimed his mom needed him there because she liked taking care of people, but it soon became apparent to Lily that it was Marshall who needed his mom — too much.

Lily went back to New York in hopes he’d followed suit and move on with his life. After she did, Marshall shared a heartbreaking moment with Ted — who’d come to avoid his own issues with Zoey. “I miss my dad, Ted. I miss him so much,” he said.

He told Ted that when he was a kid, his family would often travel in the dark of night, and he’d always be intimidated by the road of darkness before them. But he knew he’d always be okay because his dad was driving. “He was like some superhero who could see way out into the darkness. Now he’s just gone, and it’s pitch black. I can’t see where I’m going — I can’t see anything.” And I couldn’t see at that point either — because my vision was completely blocked by huge a– tears.

As much as I love the comedy of HIMYM, these teary moments are becoming highlights of the show. They’re raw and beautiful. Not forced and insightful. I took my dilemma to co-creator Craig Thomas recently, hoping he could explain the decision to take us on this not-so-sunny journey.

“You kinda know it works out for all these guys. I think the storytelling device of the show (the flashbacks and flashforwards) enables us to show some of the harder times in life, because you know that at the end of it, everyone is okay in the future,” he said. “I think that’s the great thing about looking back at your own life. You can laugh at the sad times because you got through that. That is in the past, and we all look back on our lives to have the capacity to laugh at things that at the time seemed tragic.”

I know the newish direction of these episodes has been met with some debate — they’ve been Marshall-heavy and, at times, huge downers. I get that. But they’ve also rejuvenated Mother and given it new life in its sixth season. I think that — much like Marshall’s dad in the car — we might not be able to see what’s ahead, but we should just keep driving forward, hoping for the best.

    Agree, PopWatchers?

How I Met Your Mother, “Desperation Day” (6.16)

Posted by R. Lackie on February 14, 2011

Last week, the inevitable occurred as Ted and Zoey (Jennifer Morrison) began their new romance. What next? A review of the episode, written by Tami Sagher and directed by Pamela Fryman, after the jump…

“Who wants to spend Valentine’s Day alone, distracting yourself from the fact that nobody loves you with some sad little activity?” – Nora

That was really, really cute. The writing was sharp, the cast chemistry was the best its been in a while, and the guest cast, particularly Nazanin Boniadi as Nora and Jennifer Morrison as Zoey, fit right in. This episode didn’t blow the roof off, but it was really adorable, and cute.

I laughed plenty here, from the body-pillow shenanigans to the St. Valentine’s Historical Flashback to the regression of Ted and Marshall to little boys. Some of the ‘desperation day’ stuff left a bad taste in my mouth (I prefer these plots when Barney turns out to be wrong), and it was only Robin’s brassy nonchalance in the face of Valentine’s Day singehood that made that alright.

And this episode had one particularly fantastic moment. A few shows have dealth with the moment where a young person realises that adults don’t actually have the answers, most memorably in recent memory Community with Troy in “Mixology Certification” (2.10), and typically its a pretty powerful moment. Even though Marshall Eriksen is over 30, and left boyhood a long time ago, him sitting in that car and realising that being an adult is composed of pretending you have answers when you don’t was a standout in a great comeback season.

Not an episode that will make any Top 10 of the year lists, but the one that probably most-effortlessly captures the feeling and funny of earlier seasons. Even ideas that should have seemed stupid (like the body pillow) produced some good laughs here. I wonder, though, if the true test for Ted’s arc is in his first Zoey-heavy episode of the relationship. We will see.

How I Met Your Mother 6.16 "Desperation Day" Review

    By Lauren || Filed February 15th, 2011

Valentine's Day....you either love it or you hate it.

Not too many people are impartial when it comes to the holiday of love but Barney Stinson, well he loves the day before it.

    Desperation Day.

For Barney, the day before Valentine’s Day is when every single girl is so desperate and lonely for attention from a man that she’ll pretty much give anything to get some lovin’. It's like his Christmas.

Hands down, the best part of last night’s episode of How I Met Your Mother was Barney. Every joke he spewed invoked an audible laugh and the Barney-isms spoken were bountiful and hilarious.

I fell totally in love with this character again during this episode. It felt like a throwback to classic HIMYM and even included some great flashbacks.

Little did Barney know that this would be the Valentine’s Day where he would actually end up being set up on a date with Robin’s friend Nora for the epic laser tag game in Poughkeepsie. According to imdb.com, Nora who is played by Nazanin Boniadi will be on the show for at least two more episodes so I’ll be interested to see where this arc takes Barney.

Nora has got some spunk and called Barney out at the bar so I like her already.

Meanwhile, Lily is missing Marshall hard and heads to Minnesota to try to convince him to come home. Upon arriving at his mother’s house, she sees Marshall has essentially reverted back to a teenager, letting his mom wait on him and playing video games all day.

I must say kudos to the writers of HIMYM and Jason Segel for taking the time and portraying what I believe is a realistic type of grief. So many sitcoms tend to have a sad moment and then sweep it under the rug in the next episodes but this show has done a great job of showing how Marshall’s dad’s death has really impacted the character and wrapped up the storyline nicely. Last night's scene of Marshall talking about how he can't see ahead because his dad was gone was quite poignant.

As for Ted and Zoey, their relationship was first moving too slow and then moving light years ahead. If I were Ted I would have freaked out and flown to Minnesota too once Zoey started talking about remembering their first Valentine’s Day for years to come. All was A-OK by the end of the episode though.

While I still really like the chemistry between these two, I found myself really drawn to the other story lines last night and not caring much about Ted and Zoey. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what else their relationship has in store.

    Some additional thoughts:

    * The difference between a guy and girl's booty call...True? I think so. What did you think?
    * I loved the flashbacks tonight. St. Desperacious plucking up the insecure bridesmaids...genius.
    * How awesome is it that Marshall and Lily watch Predator every Valentine's Day? and How great was it when they went from Lily's description of the movie to Barney's heat vision to scope out the bar?
    * Also Lily mouthing the words to predator at the end of the episode was amazing.
    * Lily substituting Marshall with the Marshpillow was amusing but I loved all the subtle references of how being with a pillow would be crazy far more.

    Quips of the Night:

    * "Private Booty reporting for Duty." - Lily
    * “A magical night when a 10 has the self esteem of a 4 and the depraved enthusiam of a 2." - Barney re: Desperation Day
    * "He is on a pretty sick Dr. Mario run." - Marshall's mom
    * "This is Barney, a high functioning sociopath and my ex." - Robin re: introducing Barney to her friends
    * "I'm Huey Lewis...and you just heard the news." - Barney

So what did you guys think? Did you love Barney in this episode just as much as I did? and What about his love interest Nora? What about Ted and Zoey...were you as iffy about them as I was? What was your funniest moment? Sound off in the comments below!!

'How I Met Your Mother': Happy Desperation Day!

    By Mikey O'Connell
    February 15, 2011 1:30 PM ET

It's Valentine's Day, which means that in the "How I Met Your Mother"-verse, it's also some fictitious and tangentially-related holiday dedicated to physical abuse and/or getting laid.

"Desperation Day," as Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) explains, is the 24-hour period leading up until Valentine's Day, in which the single ladies are ripe for the picking. Back story is delivered in a tunic-filled historic reenactment, allowing Robin (Cobie Smulders) to do her generic/amazing period piece voice. (If there's still any chance of getting her in "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," may we be the first to enthusiastically suggest?)

So D-day is just another vehicle for Barney to have casual sex. Or is it? Our player is dealt a surprising card in the form of a beautiful Brit who smells like rain and knows his game all too well. But before we get to that, let's look at our other players, all avoiding Valentine's for one reason or another.

    Lily
Still temporarily widowed by Marshall's (Jason Segel) stay in Minnesota, Lily (Alyson Hannigan) is getting a little stir crazy. She dresses a body pillow in her husband's clothing, names him "Marsh-pillow," before heading to Minnesota to keep him company. But instead of finding him doting on his mother, he's completely regressed into his childhood self.

    Ted
Taking things at a snail's pace with Zoey (Jennifer Morrison), Ted (Josh Radnor) thinks he's finally going to the next level with his new girl when she invites him over to "bake cookies." His overnight bag, complete with "British morning socks," throws her for a loop and she reveals that she's taking this new relationship really seriously. Her clearly not being the mother, he is not. So he too flees to St. Cloud, Minnesota, apparently the avoidance capital of the Midwest.

    Barney
Several lines into his attempt to bed a coquettish little thing in a mustard cardigan, Barney realizes that she knows him too well to succumb to his usual tactics. But instead of giving up, he waxes on about his love laser tag. Nora spends the rest of her Desperation Day evening hanging out with the abridged gang, before leaving Barney slightly heartbroken at their McLarens booth.

    Robin
Not one to complain about being date-less for Desperation Day, Robin hits the bars with her awkward co-workers, one of whom is Artemis Pebdani, playing more or less the same character she does on "It's Always Sunny." Not that we'd ever complain... Robin doesn't get a whole lot of development in the episode, but being the best ex-girlfriend ever, she ditches the Valentine's laser tag competition and sends Nora in her stead. We'll give this new relationship two or three more episodes before we start seeing some jealousy from Scherbatsky.

    Marshall
As much as Marshall would like to think his mother is enjoying his lingering in Minnesota, she's over it. She tells Lily to take him back to New York with her, but he won't budge. Going home means fully digesting the loss of his father. The time and care "HIMYM" has given this storyline is one of the more memorable things its ever done. And before we see it dip out of weekly reference, we get a parting shot from Bill Fagerbakke as Marvin Eriksen Sr. Marshall. He takes a seat behind his son as he drives down a road beset with metaphor-laden blizzard, and tells him he never really knew where he was going either.

And if Marshall can accept life without his father, Ted can certainly deal with the emotional pressures of the newly divorced Zoey. They head back to New York to take their respective bulls by their horns.

Thanks for the screen caps. Jen looked really hot in this episode. I really liked her clothes... especially that leather jacket. :)

There's a podcast for Desperation Day on cbs.com.
    Description:
Actress Jennifer Morrison ("Zoey") discusses her acting past and the episode 'Desperation Day.'

I'd really like to listen to it but it's not available in my country.

I listened to the podcast, Jennifer talks about how she became an actress (Hobbit), her previous work experience (House MD, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Star Trek), her role in Glee (former boyfriend?) and her relationship with the guys of the cast How I Met Your Mother.
I managed to recover the full poadcast but the audio is not particularly good, I'll try to improve it and I will post it.
    Thanks for your report.

I hope that the authors planned this strange use of Zoey bec she's The Mother. My brother is NOT still into Zoey neither in the new relationship... Stella was so great instead. The authors made Stella to be loved by the viewers while Zoey is cute, funny, interesting but... I don't know. I bet they have something big for the finale.
