Once Upon a Time Episode 11 Recap: Fool Me Once, Shame On You...

    Written By Clarissa

Trickery and twists were alive and well in this week's Once Upon a Time, which gave us backstory on Sidney/Magic Mirror, as well as a bit of the Evil Queen's origin.

In the fairytale world of Once Upon a Time, we met King Leopold for the first time. The father of Snow White and the husband of the Queen, he was a happy man who happened upon a magic lamp one day. Rubbing it, a Genie appeared. As it turns out, the man we know as the Magic Mirror was once a Genie. Fortunately for him - at the time - King Leopold felt he had everything he needed, so he decided to free the Genie from the lamp instead of taking a wish for himself. Then he wished to turn the third wish over to the Genie. After, Leopold invited the Genie back to his castle to join his birthday celebrations.

As it turns out, Leopold very much loved his daughter, but he could never love the Queen as he did his first wife (Snow's mother) and the Queen knew this. Drawn by her sadness, the Genie struck a friendship with her and fell in love. When Leopold learned that his wife had fallen in love with another man, he tasked the Genie with discovering that man's identity. Soon after, Leopold had the Queen confined to her rooms, so her father approached the Genie and asked him to deliver a box to the Queen. He did and learned that it contained vipers from his homeland. The Queen said that she could no longer bear her life - and her unfulfilled love with the Genie - and wanted to kill herself. Instead, the Genie suggested they use the vipers to kill the King.

After the King had died, the Genie returned to the Queen and soon discovered that she had set him up. Wanting him to kill Leopold, she tricked him into falling in love with her and also framed him for the murder. Despondent, he used his final wish to remain with her forever. But the magic delivered an unexpected result - as happens on Once Upon a Time - and he transformed into the Magic Mirror.

Oy. The Queen sure is a bitch, isn't she? For a while there, I was convinced by her acting and thought there was some goodness within her. I wondered if Snow had somehow deprived her of the Genie in the end and that that would be the catalyst for her hatred of her stepdaughter. But the Queen was a master manipulator. How far back does this evil go? And what of the reason she hates Snow White? While the Genie storyline was admittedly a bit cheesy, I did appreciate the dedication of the Once Upon a Time writers in giving us completely unexpected origin stories. The Magic Mirror was once a Genie? Who saw that one coming?

Once Upon a TimeTrickery and twists were also alive and well in Storybrooke in this week's Once Upon a Time. After Henry's "castle" was damaged in a storm, he was worried about his fairytale book, which he had buried in the sand. Regina came by, finally learned about Henry and Emma's "secret place". Later in the episode, Henry's book disappeared. At the end of the hour, we learned that the mysterious writer had taken the book from the hiding place.

At Granny's diner, a drunken Sidney approached Emma, wanting to team up to get revenge on Regina. He said that she had humiliated him in the election and then got him fired from the paper after he started researching an exposé on her corruption in the mayor's office.

When Regina continued to put down Emma, she eventually decided to take Sidney up on his offer. He said he found evidence that Regina had taken $50,000 of the city's money for her personal use. After bugging Regina's office and then later breaking in to find missing records, they realized she had taken the money to buy a piece of land. Thinking she was going to build a house on the land, they exposed her scheme at the town meeting. But Regina pulled the wool over their eyes, revealing that she actually bought the land to build a playground for the children of Storybrooke.

Disheartened and embarrassed, Sidney and Emma regrouped at Granny's for a beer and to lick their wounds. Emma vowed to find another way to bring Regina down. Later, we saw Sidney in Regina's office and learned that his entire plan with Emma had been a ruse. He and Regina had come up with the plan together and he executed it perfectly in order to humiliate Emma. Now Emma has been forbidden to see Henry by Regina and must stay away with him.

I have to say, I had not expected the twist with Sidney at the end. Considering the horrible way Regina has treated him - in the fairytale world and in Storybrooke - I thought his anger towards her was genuine. But Regina certainly has that town sewn up. The question, however, is exactly who this mysterious writer is, what he's doing in Storybrooke and exactly why he stole Henry's book. Is he its author or someone else? Also, Mary Margaret and David were not forgotten after their first kiss in last week's episode. They only had a short scene together - where they went on a picnic as a date - but it's clear that they've decided to make a go of it. Of course, David needs to come clean with Kathryn or make a break with her. I sense danger in their future.

Once Upon a Time is on a short hiatus until February 12.

.....A very good episode. A thought did enter my mind (yes, that is bizarre) that Sydney might be setting Emma up. Never trust a mirror named Sydney !

TV Ratings Sunday: 'Pro Bowl' Prelims Down, Still Leads NBC Win; 'Once Upon A Time,' 'Good Wife' Rise, As Fox Animated Comedies Miss NFL

Written By Bill Gorman - January 30th, 2012

Of course NBC will top the night in the adults 18-49 ratings with the NFL Pro Bowl filling up Sunday primetime.

In our typical double disclaimer noting that these preliminary ratings results for the live Pro Bowl will be adjusted, almost certainly up, last night's preliminary adults 18-49 rating were down vs. last year's preliminaries, so a year to year decline in the finals is likely.

Without an NFL lift Fox's animated line up took a dive vs. 2 weeks ago, The Cleveland Show had just a 1.3 adults 18-49 rating, vs. a 2.2 rating three weeks ago in its last new episode. The Simpsons dropped to a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, vs. a NFL boosted 5.4 rating two weeks ago. In its second night, but third episode, Napoleon Dynamite drew a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating, vs. a 4.4 and 3.3 ratings in its first night. Family Guy had a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating, down 32% vs. a 4.4 rating two weeks ago. American Dad had a 2.4 adults 18-49 rating, up 9%vs. a 2.2 rating three weeks ago.

ABC's Once Upon A Time scored a 3.4 adults 18-49 rating, up 6% vs. a 3.2 rating last week against the NFC Championship game. The Hallmark Hall Of Fame movie A Smile as Big as the Moon drew a 1.5 adults 18-49 rating. At 7pm, America's Funniest Home Videos' 1.9 adults 18-49 rating was up 73% vs. last week's episode that faced the NFC Championship.

CBS's Undercover Boss drew a 3.0 adults 18-49 rating, up 30% vs. a 2.3 rating last week when it went against the NFC Championship game. The Good Wife had a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating, up 10% vs. its 2.0 rating two weeks ago in its last original episode. CSI: Miami had a 2.2 adults 18-49 rating, down 15% vs. a 2.6 rating three weeks ago in its last original episode. Earlier in the evening, 60 Minutes had a season low 1.5 adults 18-49 rating, identical to two weeks ago.

'Once Upon a Time' 'Fruit of the Poisonous Tree' Recap: Sydney’s Identity

    January 29, 2012 11:00 PM EST

In last week's Once Upon a Time "7:15 A.M.," Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) finally reunited as Mary Margaret and David. But that's basically beside the point in "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." They're still sneaking off to have a picnic by the river, but the story instead turns to the story of the Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla). Of course, this is a piece of the puzzle, because somehow Snow White took something from the Evil Queen, and that's why there's no more happy endings in Storybrooke -- but it seemed to stop the overall storyline by rewinding yet again.

Even so, this piece of the Once Upon a Time puzzle was intriguing, because the fairy tale identity of disgraced reporter Sydney Glass (Giancarlo Esposito) is finally revealed. And he isn't who fans thought he would be.

    Emma resorts to illegal means

The mayor is finally taking things too far, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) decides to stick up for Henry (Jared Gilmore) by finding an ally in Sydney Glass. The mayor had Henry's "castle" destroyed after the storm knocked most of it down. In doing so, Henry's fairy tale book has disappeared from the sand. (Turns out, the mysterious stranger [Eion Bailey] has it).

Through Sydney, Emma learns that Regina took $50,000 from the town's budget on Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." Sydney thinks this is what they need to expose the mayor for who she really is -- someone willing to destroy what people love. Emma ends up giving in to Sydney's demands, and breaks into and bugs the mayor's office. With some new intel, Emma learns the Mayor is meeting someone with a final payment. But who? After Emma's brakes are cut, she nearly doesn't discover that Emma is buying a piece of land from Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle). But she does, and she's ready to use this illegally obtained info to prove to the town that the Mayor is ruthless and that she's using town funds to build a lavish, second home.

But she's not. It's a playground for the children of Storybrooke. Emma is disgraced, and now the mayor has forbidden her from seeing Henry. Plus, Emma may think she has a new ally now in Sydney Glass, but she doesn't. The mayor is working with Sydney, but are Sydney's affections really being returned? Or is the mayor using him, just as she uses everyone?

Who is Sydney Glass in the Once Upon a Time fairy tale?

Sydney begins as the genie in the bottle, until a king gives him his freedom. He then joins the king at court and decides not to use his last wish, which the king has given him. After all, every wish always has unexpected consequences.

The genie befriends the unhappy Queen Regina, for he understands the queen's desire to be free of the court and the king. After all, the king can't love her like he loves Snow and his first wife. As a gift, the genie gives Regina a mirror, "So you can see yourself, the way I see you."

When the king traps the queen in her bedroom, the genie delivers a box to the queen. It's a viper. She claims she is going to end her life -- but the genie stops her, and decides to kill the king for her instead. All it takes is one bite, and the king is dead.

But the queen has framed the genie on Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." She never loved the genie, she claims with tears in her eyes. The genie doesn't accept this though and refuses to run away. He uses his one last wish: "I wish to be with you forever, to look upon your face always, to never leave your side." With that one wish, he's forever trapped in the Evil Queen's mirror.

What did you think of Sydney Glass's fairy tale story? Did you wish that Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" had focused more on Snow White and Prince Charming again? Or did you like this insight into Regina's past?
