TVGuide.com Asks: Which Character Do You Want to See Back on Your Favorite Show?

    Apr 4, 2011 04:40 PM ET
    by TV Guide News

Sometimes a show just ain't the same once one of its key characters dies, leaves or gets otherwise written out. Think of the outrage when Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) packed up her stethoscope and left House's Princeton Plainsboro — and Chase — in her rear-view. There's been a hole in the heart of Brothers & Sisters since Walker sibling Tommy (Balthazar Getty) lost his mind and fled South of the Border. And who among us doesn't miss the smart ties and whipsmart repartee of art director Sal Romano (Bryan Batt) on Mad Men? Don't even get us started on the revolving door at Grey's Anatomy's Seattle Grace Hospital.

So if you had the power of TV-character reanimation, who would you bring back?

I'll go first. I miss the way Weeds' Conrad (Romany Malco) and Heylia (Tonye Patano) were able to rein in Nancy's more egotistical flights of fancy.

Now you. Which character(s) would you bring back?

Volevo condividere con voi questa intervista ad Amber Tamblyn riguardo alla sua uscita da House.
Sembra che con lei siano tutti superaffettuosi, Hugh Laurie le ha addirittura organizzato una festa d'addio a sorpresa:
    CITAZIONE
Amber Tamblyn on Bittersweet House Departure: 'I Didn't Want To Go'

    Michael Ausiello

In the end, Martha Masters just couldn’t play House. Yes, on Monday, Amber Tamblyn’s season-long run on Fox’s medical drama came to an end when her by-the-books character spent a painful day playing by Dr. Crankypants’ rules – in other words, none. While the PYMD’s fate was left up in the air, Tamblyn’s next step is pretty much set in stone: The Joan of Arcadia alum is developing a new Fox series with House exec Katie Jacobs and The Wire co-creator Ed Burns that will find her playing a public school teacher. Just hours before her swan song aired, the actress explained why she opted to not permanently call House home and revealed what Hugh Laurie did that brought her to tears. (No, the nice kind of tears… You’ll see.)
TVLINE | Do you think House drove Masters out of the medical profession or just Princeton-Plainsboro?
That’s a good question. It’s left open… I think she is going to still practice [medicine]. At the end of the day, she just couldn’t do what House does.
TVLINE | House creator David Shore has made no secret of the fact that he would’ve loved to have kept you around full-time. At what point did you decide you were going to leave to pursue this new series with Ed Burns and Katie Jacobs?
I’ll be perfectly honest. The three of us – me, Katie Jacobs and David Shore – were talking about doing something together. That was the original situation. And it just seemed kind of impossible for David to be working on more than one incredible show [at the same time]… I didn’t really want to separate myself from either one of them. I think they’re both so fantastic. But realistically, we knew it was not going to be able to work out that way, so Katie and I got his blessing and went and did our own thing… Thirteen episodes was always what I signed up to do. That was the plan all along. I never had any intention of staying longer than 13 episodes. That got really emotionally difficult toward the end because I didn’t want to go. But Katie and I fell in love with this other project and I knew the time was right.
TVLINE | Was there ever a moment when you considered sticking around?
I don’t think I could’ve. I like to jump around a lot. I feel this way a lot about projects. I felt this way about Joan of Arcadia, because people were really upset about that ending and they always ask and I always say, “I think it’s better to have two really fantastic seasons of television than… Who knows what would’ve happened after that?” I don’t like to get comfortable where I am. I think it’s dangerous to be too comfortable in what you’re doing.
TVLINE | Which of your House castmates will you still be friends with five years from now?
All of them. I text all of them almost every day. Peter Jacobson does not save my number, so I’ll text him something and he’ll be like, “Who is this?!” And I’m like, “Your worst nightmare, jerk.” Even Olivia [Wilde]. I only worked with her for a week but she’s so awesome. We’ve been texting back and forth. We’re going to try to do dinner next time she’s in town. I really had a Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz moment. I felt like I was coming out of some amazing dream that I’m sad is ending. But I’m also excited because I get to take one of those people from the dream and make a new dream.
TVLINE | Did you get a nice send-off?
Hugh Laurie asked me if I wanted to go get drinks after work one day, and I said, “I’d love to.” So I put on my best red lipstick and went to meet him for drinks and he had rented out a restaurant and thrown me a big surprise going-away party. Everybody was there. It was like this whole sit-down dinner. And Hugh gave this really sweet speech about us working together. I was in tears. It blew my mind. And this was on a work night too. I think that’s a pretty rad send-off… No one’s ever done that for me. I called my boyfriend afterwards crying because I was really touched by it, especially since I’m not a main cast member.

It's Official: Fox Renews House For Season 8

The doctors are in… some of them at least.

After lengthy talks, Fox has closed a deal with producer Universal to bring House back for an eighth and likely final season.

“Over the past seven seasons, House has redefined the medical drama and has given us one of television’s most compelling and iconic characters,” said Fox president Kevin Reilly in a statement. “From the producers to the incredible writers to the unbelievably talented cast and crew, the House team is fearless in its creativity and I can’t wait to see what they have in store next year.”

Curiously, Fox’s press release doesn’t mention which castmembers will be returning for season 8. As Deadline first reported Monday night, Robert Sean Leonard and Omar Epps have inked new deals, but it’s unclear where things stand with Lisa Edelstein and Jesse Spencer. Hugh Laurie, Olivia Wilde and Peter Jacobson were already under contract for an eighth season.

TVLine’s Renewal Scorecard has been updated to reflect the news.

Thoughts? Relieved the show will be back but anxious about the uncertain fates of Edelstein and Spencer? Hit the comments!

Jesse Spencer on the Next Dean of Medicine, Lisa Edelstein and the End of 'House'

    Monday, August 22, 2011

During the TCA Press Tour FOX party, I asked Jesse Spencer for a minute of his time and he graciously gave me eight. We spoke about the future of Chase, who would be the next Dean of Medicine at PPTH and what Spencer would like to do after the end of House.

Spencer started the interview by telling me he was basically sworn to secrecy about any plot lines of the show, so I did the best I could trying to get him to slip up. I first asked him what he'd like to see happen for Chase, especially if this was the last season of House. He said he'd love for Chase to get caught for what he did to Diabola (remember when he killed the African dictator?), but then to be a fugitive of the law and drive off to Mexico. I asked if Thirteen might accompany him across the border, but Spencer said it was "never going to happen."

Would Spencer ever want to see his character back together with Jennifer Morrison's Cameron? He's not opposed to the idea of her coming back, but knows it's practically impossible because of logistics since Morrison has a new show (Once Upon a Time) on ABC. He would enjoy seeing some more maturity from his character and has noticed growth in Chase.

Now, for the big news! When I asked Spencer if he was going to be the new Dean of Medicine, he confirmed that it would in fact, be him! And then he retracted by saying, "Well, you know, I'd like to be the new Dean." I let Spencer know jokingly that he effectively killed the headline of my article, and then he quipped, "Well, you know, 'like' is code..." I don't know about how anyone else feels, but Spencer is my first choice for Dean of Medicine. House and him respect one another, Foreman already had a shot and screwed it up, and if Wilson gets the position, well, I don't even want to go there. So you heard it here first, Chase might be Dean. You're welcome!

When I asked Spencer about Lisa Edelstein's departure, he mused, "It's really sad, we lost Jen a couple years ago...you know it's sad when someone's there from the original cast and we're all in it together. Great cast, always gotten along very well, we actually like each other, which is apparently rare. Lisa's great, really sad to lose her. She'll do really well. She's very talented...It's a sad departure, but she'll be fine." I mentioned to Spencer that according to every other television cast that has ever spoken about their family-like rapport, it doesn't seem so rare. He laughed, and said "I know better."

And what about his favorite risky hobby of surfing? When I asked him if he'd ever been injured, he pulled up the back of his shirt to show me a gnarly scar. Spencer said that he can't be stopped now that he's rediscovered his love of the sport.

After I asked Spencer about the ending, he said, "You know, I've been wondering the same thing. Um, it will probably be a bittersweet ending. It's not going to end with House being cured of his issues...going to be dramatic and something big will happen."

So what's next for Spencer? What's going to happen when House ends? Spencer wants to work in Australia again someday and would love to do film or another TV series. He especially loves the consistency of a television series. I suggested something on HBO and Spencer was quick to say yes. So in other words, look for him anywhere and everywhere once House ends.

Talking to Spencer was a pleasure! He was hilarious, kind, and fun to be around. And that's all I'll say since I'm attempting to maintain my professionalism.
