Matt's Inside Line: Scoop on Vampire Diaries, Glee, Once Upon a Time, White Collar and More

    CITAZIONE
Once Upon a Time | During a confab with the series’ creators, we asked why, when Mary Margaret and David finally shared a smooch some weeks ago, it wasn’t a grand moment of enlightenment a la when Sideways Sawyer and Juliet touched hands. Edward Kitsis answered, “It wasn’t an ‘a-ha’ moment for them because the curse hasn’t been broken yet — and clearly they’re not the keys to breaking it. They were just the keys to making the savior.” So, maybe that savior – aka Emma – is the one who needs to share “true love’s first kiss” to start unraveling the queen’s curse? “That is an interesting question,” Kitsis allowed. “Unfortunately, Kathryn’s disappearance is going to take up a lot of Emma’s time,” meaning no lives-changing romance for the sexy sheriff just yet.

Scoop: Once Upon a Time Sends Prince Charming and Rumpelstiltskin to [Spoiler]

    by Andy Patrick

After screening tonight’s Once Upon a Time, in which Grumpy’s real name is revealed (as well as how he got his unfortunate new one), plus previewing the first act of the upcoming Red/Ruby-centric hour, the show’s cast and creators took to the stage at PaleyFest 2012 to dole out the spoilers. First and foremost: As Raphael Sbarge (Archie/Jiminy Cricket) revealed, David and Mr. Gold are headed for his shrink’s couch. “David’s got problems,” laughed Josh Dallas, Prince Charming’s portrayer. As for “the beast,” the modern-day Rumpelstiltskin “doesn’t have anyone else to talk to,” noted Robert Carlyle, who plays him.

What else came out during the Q&A, moderated by TVLine’s own Matt Webb Mitovich?

    * Emma isn’t going to start to believe Henry’s tall tales anytime soon. However, Jennifer Morrison teased that at least “she’s gonna start to think something’s up. She’s [just] not sure what.”

    * Kathryn’s absence will be more of a hindrance than a help to the romance of David and Mary Margaret. “It’s put David in a place,” explained Dallas, “where he feels very guilty and responsible for her disappearance.” And, although her vanishing will be resolved in short order, there’s yet another obstacle ahead!

    * We haven’t seen the last of Sidney Glass or Sheriff Graham. Not only does the man in the mirror have an arc before season’s end, but the Huntsman, series creator Edward Kitsis reminded fans, “is still very much alive in fairy tale world.”

    * Also “before we get to the finale,” Kitsis said, “we’ll be pretty clear on who [mysterious newbie August] is.” Added co-creator Adam Horowitz, out there in the webisphere, already “someone’s got it right.”

    * The root of the Evil Queen’s hatred of Snow White at last will be revealed before this season ends. “Its complication,” noted a cryptic Ginnifer Goodwin, “is what is so beautiful about it.”

    * Yes, yes, they will eventually get to the Little Mermaid. “For us,” Kitsis said, “[Ariel] was more of a Season 2 thing.”

    * And, last but not least, the Evil Queen’s frienemy, Maleficent, will likely be back. “It would be a disappointment,” Horowitz acknowledged, “if we never saw her again.”

When will we learn what Snow White did that made the Evil Queen hate her so much on Once Upon a Time? — Sarah

NATALIE: April 1 is the magical day. So much is revealed in the hour that Lana Parrilla says she was surprised the story wasn't spread over several episodes. "You'll meet young Regina," she says. "I look totally different -- fresh-faced, doe-eyed, young, fun, excited about life, in love, and then it just gets really dark. It's way before she becomes the Evil Queen." Adds Ginnifer Goodwin: "Folks will sympathize with the Evil Queen in ways they're not expecting."

Ausiello: “Certain things happen toward the last five or six episodes that shake our relationship,” teases Robert Carlyle. “You realize that maybe Rumplestiltskin [didn't create the curse] for her at all; maybe he was doing it for himself. Maybe the curse was created for him.”

Kit4atw: Any news on Belle and Rumple on OUAT?
When we caught up with executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, our number one question was whether Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle) will come face-to-face with his Belle (Emilie de Ravin), who is currently in a padded cell, by season's end? "All I can say is Emilie is coming back onto the show," Horowitz teases. "We're very excited to have her back." Kitsis ominously adds, "And God help whoever did that to her!"

Once Upon a Time | Securing scoop from the show bosses on the Stranger aka August W. Booth, they’re especially elusive. Heck, they wont even say if he’s genuinely crushing on Emma. “He seems to be operating on an agenda,” notes EP Eddy Kitsis, “so the interesting thing is to ask is whether those feelings are real or not.” Kitsis will confirm this much, though – August did in fact add pages to Henry’s storybook, “for a very, very specific reason.” (And I myself will offer this one piece of intel regarding August’s trustworthiness: In the diner scene of this Sunday’s episode, pay close attention to the lemurs.) Speaking of new men in Emma’s life, EP Steve Pearlman says the March 25 episode featuring the Mad Hatter (played by Gossip Girl‘s Sebastian Stan) “is quite a big one for Emma. She comes into contact with a new character in Storybrooke who starts her onto a bit of a different journey. And by the end of the season, we will get Emma to a place where she has to make some decisions about her future.”

ONCE UPON A TIME’: ANSWERS AND APPLES ‘RED AS BLOOD’

The magical first season of Once Upon a Time is set to wrap up in May, but don’t ask for the last episode’s title. “We’re debating it,” said co-executive producer Adam Horowitz. “We’ve run out — that’s it. We can’t think of a title now,” fellow co-EP Edward Kitsis joked.

But the penultimate episode is a different story. I’ll let you theorize exactly what the title “Apple Red as Blood,” means, but I can tell you that it’s part of a final arc that will focus heavily on the major players rather than stand-alone stories — like the heartwarming one we saw this week with Grumpy. “Next week is who the big bad wolf is. And then we just take off,” said Kitsis. “You’re gonna find out why the evil queen hates Snow White, what happened to Rumple’s son. You’re gonna find out who the stranger is. You’re gonna find out what happened to Kathryn and her disappearance, and it’s just gonna go crazy now.” Crazy, indeed — especially with Mary Margaret and David, Josh Dallas said.

Mr. Gold will act as Mary Margaret’s lawyer after she becomes implicated in Kathryn’s disappearance (and, possibly, murder, Kitsis teased!), and, says Dallas, “Lots of things go down. [David] feels very responsible,” he says. And it will all lead up to the epic season-ender. “All I can say is I just got the script for episode 21 and it is going to go someplace that the audience will not expect it ever to go,” he said.

Once Upon a Time's Mama Drama: Will Emma Finally Learn the Truth?

    Mar 9, 2012 08:58 PM ET
    by Natalie Abrams

Dealing with family can often be challenging, but in the world of Once Upon a Time, the element of magic has made the family dynamic even more complicated.

Jennifer Morrison's down-to-earth Emma had previously lived a rootless existence, but now she's decided to stay in Storybrooke long-term, and her presence has begun to chip away at the curse the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) had unleashed on the town. While this has caused the residents to see changes in their lives that have put them on the path to learning their true fairy tale identities, Emma is also undergoing her own transformation. Although she's currently unaware that the alter ego of her roommate Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) is actually both her mother and Snow White, living with her has made an impact.

"In the beginning of the year, Emma was a person with walls up, who didn't let anyone in," executive producer Edward Kitsis tells TVGuide.com. "We always said she's a character looking for home, but she doesn't know where that is because she's never experienced it. Now, through the year, we've seen Henry [Jared Gilmore] and Mary Margaret poking at that wall. Underneath that wall is the role of being a savior, and who wants the job of saving everybody when you can't save yourself?"

Though Emma has been mainly working to uncover the true motives of the mayor Regina -- who is in fact the Evil Queen and therefore Mary Margaret's stepmother -- as the series heads towards its first season finale, Emma's emotional journey will come back into focus. "She's going to have to make a decision what she wants out of her life, if she wants to stay in this town and what her role in this town is going to be," executive producer Steve Pearlman says.

In particular, the upcoming Wonderland-themed episode on March 25 will mark a turning point for Emma in whether she truly believes in the curse or not. "She obviously doesn't believe in any of this, but now there's been enough people who have said enough things that there's enough cracks for her to start to figure out that something is going on," Morrison says. "She's slowly, but surely broken down to possibly believe."

Believing that the curse is real, and that the Storybrooke residents are actually fairy tale characters, means that Emma will have to accept that her new best friend, Mary Margaret, is actually her mother, whose actual identity is also Snow White — both of which the roommates often joke about in passing. "Ultimately, there's going to be a point where that has to happen," Morrison says. "I think we're headed toward those worlds having to be exposed in some way. Emma can't be skeptical for six years."

As Emma continues to butt heads with Regina, the producers plan to juxtapose their often hostile relationship with that of Snow White and the Evil Queen. "The parallels between all those characters, and the fact that they're all one big dysfunctional, twisted family is something we're playing into in a big way," executive producer Adam Horowitz says.

Those parallels will play heavy into an early April episode, where the audience will finally learn the catalyst of the Evil Queen's hatred for Snow White, which ultimately lead to the curse. To tease the upcoming reveal, Kitsis asked fans to ponder this: "Why was the Evil Queen so unhappy at their wedding? Why did her very wedding make her so upset?" Adds Horowitz: "True love seems to piss off the Evil Queen, why is that?"

"It's a real gift to the audience that we're going to tell that story this season," Goodwin notes. "It's a very important piece of the puzzle, and folks will sympathize with the Evil Queen in ways they're not expecting."

As TVGuide.com previously reported, that episode will flash back to a young Evil Queen — and a young Snow White not played by Goodwin — and the Queen's own mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey). "Cora helps me understand Regina more because the way Regina is with Henry — we see that she loves her son, maybe not in the healthiest way, but she does and that's very similar to how Cora loves Regina," says Parrilla, who also teases that we may see more heart-crushing before the season is up. "Cora loves her daughter, but she wants the best for her and she controls and manipulates the situation in the same ways that Regina does with Henry."

While Parrilla was shy to say whether Regina might ultimately change her mind about the curse, she noted, "There are some concerns and questions around the curse that you'll see, like, who really made that curse and what was in that curse?"

Still, the curse may be affected in other ways as the producers plan to call back to the premiere's pivotal clock-ticking moment in the finale. "It's huge," Pearlman says of the season-ender. "It's quite large in typical Lost fashion. With Emma coming to town in the pilot, she got the clock to start ticking, which started to affect everybody in the town in different ways. In the season finale, there will be something that will happen that will affect everybody in the town."

Once Upon a Time airs Sundays at 8/7c on ABC.
