Vancouver conjures worlds of fantasy and fact in Once Upon a Time

One of TV's biggest gambles tells tale of intersecting lives in parallel worlds, one set in present-day reality, the other set in a fairy-tale kingdom of noble princes, evil monarchs, unrequited heroes and sleeping beauties.

    By Alex Strachan

BEVERLY HILLS, California — In a fall network TV season of remakes, retreads and recycled ideas, Once Upon a Time stands out like a shining beacon of hope.

The made-in-Vancouver parable — a Hail Mary tale of intersecting lives in parallel worlds, one set in present-day reality, the other set in a fairy-tale kingdom of noble princes, evil monarchs, unrequited heroes and sleeping beauties — is both one of the biggest gambles of a fall season that, by its nature, is risk-averse, and potentially one of its most heartwarming, life-affirming success stories.

When Once Upon a Time premieres in late October, it will ask of its audience both a willing suspension of disbelief and the belief that this could be really happening. The set-in-present-day story is about a single mother abandoned as a child, who's holding down a dangerous job in the real world; the fairy-tale story is set in a world where magic has been forgotten, where fairy-tale characters are alive in body only, with only repressed memories to keep them going.

Once Upon a Time series stars an eclectic cast, all of whom have taken Vancouver to heart. It includes from longtime Vancouver resident Robert Carlyle as the dual character of "Mr. Gold" and Rumpelstiltskin, to Ginnifer Goodwin, fresh from the HBO ensemble drama Big Love, as Sister Mary Margaret/Snow White, and Lana Parrilla, a veteran of Graham Yost's Boomtown, as the boy's foster mother, Regina, and the Evil Queen.

Jennifer Morrison, one of the original ensemble players in House — Morrison played Dr. Allison Cameron — is Once Upon a Time's hard-luck single mother, Emma Swan, who gave her young son up for adoption years earlier. Her son is now back in her life, convinced she's Snow White and Prince Charming's missing daughter, and that his foster mother was born evil. Emma Swan is both irritated and alarmed by her son's fantasies; she worries for his mental well-being, but things keep happening to give her pause and shake her conviction.

Once Upon a Time has buried stakes in Vancouver and is being produced by the same production team responsible for V. Series creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz come to big, showy, eye-filling TV dramas honestly: As a scriptwriting duo, they penned scripts in each of Lost's six seasons, including the haunting episode What They Died For during that show's final season. They know about the traps and pitfalls of blurring the line between fantasy and reality, and are applying lessons learned on Lost to Once Upon a Time.

It's not enough to make the story coherent, they insist. It must be special. Network television is rife with mediocrity. Lost showed that network TV can be something different, and rewarding.

With potential reward, though, comes great risk.

"At its core, this is a character show," Kitsis said. "We're more interested in the character than the mythology. We're more interested in why the Evil Queen hates Snow White, why Grumpy is grumpy, why Gepetto wanted a boy so badly, he made one out of wood. We love the idea of going back and forth and slowly revealing what each character is missing in their life."

For the actors, Once Upon a Time's fairy-tale world is proving to be a breath of fresh air.

"It's incredibly challenging, but also inspiring," Goodwin said. "It's a unique situation, a unique process. On Big Love, we had an actress who played twins, and watching her process the two roles was very informative. What was really exciting for me was creating a character like Mary Margaret that is based on characteristics we assume the Evil Queen would have put on this woman. That's both an unusual and exciting process, to take another character's motivations into consideration when you're deciding how to express a character."

For her part, Parrilla said Once Upon a Time is reminding her why she wanted to be an actor to begin with.

"I'm having a blast," Parrilla said. "Any time an actor is handed a script where you get to play two roles, it's awesome. I've had to work hard at showing the contrast between my two characters: The Evil Queen is all-knowing, all-powerful, and she really puts everything out there, whereas Regina masks everything. She's the more complex character but, honestly, I'm having a blast working on both roles. I love them both."

Morrison, for her part, is enjoying playing the role of the skeptic.

"It's fun actually to have that perspective on things, because I feel like you need to have someone to comment on how ridiculous it all seems. It's been fun to have that genuine response to what's going on. If I were faced with this, myself, I would think it was ridiculous. So it's been freeing to have those reactions as Emma. From my perspective, she's had such a tough life — in terms of being abandoned as a child and raised in the foster system and going through all the horrible things we'll find out over time — that it's only natural that she's going to have this really tough exterior. I think that, for her to open herself to the idea that there is something out there, and then embrace that idea, is going to take some time."

The pilot was filmed earlier this year. Production convened in Vancouver this week (Aug. 9-15) on Once Upon a Time's second and third episodes. In all, 12 episodes are planned for the opening season, but Kitsis and Horowitz already have a story arc in mind for Once Upon a Time's second chapter.

Kitsis and Horowitz knew beforehand that Vancouver could be both a blessing and a burden for a complicated series with a lot of atmospheric outdoor filming, but Kitsis said it's been mostly a blessing so far.

"The advantage is — and, for us, it's a big advantage — if you like rain, there's a lot of it. It just looks beautiful up there. We love it, and we think it just looks great for the show."

Goodwin said there are times when she's playing a particularly difficult dream-world scene when the gloom suits the mood perfectly, from an actor's point of view.

"It does a lot of the imagination for us," she said. "It's really magical to shoot Snow White being woken up by Prince Charming in a snowstorm on top of a mountain, surrounded by this Ansel Adams-like evergreen photographic landscape."

The pilot episode was filmed earlier this year, during some of Vancouver's wettest, heaviest rainfall on record.

"It was actually real snow," Morrison said, "on a real mountain in a real forest. It wasn't imagined. It actually happened. It snowed for only three hours that day. It was weird. It just magically snowed for that one scene."

Once Upon a Time isn't Snow White, Horowitz insisted.

"The show isn't about breaking the curse. Obviously, that's part of it. But the show is really about these characters as real people. It's about their lives and what they're going though.

"How long can we explore these characters and what they're going through? As long as people want us to."

Exclusive: ABC's Once Upon a Time Gets Lost, Taps Alan Dale For Royal Role

Another Lost Easter egg is being planted within ABC’s Once Upon a Time, and this one walks and talks!

The highly anticipated fairytale drama — from Lost producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis — has tapped Charles Widmore himself, Alan Dale, to play the father of Josh Dallas’ Prince Charming.

“It’s a really pivotal role, and a pivotal part of the Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming story that we don’t think has been told yet,” Horowitz tells TVLine, adding that Dale is booked for one episode “but we’re leaving the door open for a larger tale to potentially tell with him.”

Dale is the first Lost alum to invade Time‘s turf, but probably not the last. The pilot alone contains numerous references to the late ABC drama, including a clock stuck at 8:15 and a Geronimo Jackson bumper sticker. It also boasts Lost co-creator Damon Lindelof as a consultant. “Damon has been a godfather to us,” Kitsis told reporters earlier this month at the Television Critics Assoc. press tour. “His name is not on the show, but he is in the DNA of it.”

Once Upon a Time premieres Sunday, Oct. 23 at 8/7.

Fall Shows We Love: Once Upon a Time Is Magic. Period.

Today 8:05 AM PDT by Christina Dowling and Kristin Dos Santos

Snow White, Prince Charming, the Evil Queen, blah blah blah. It all sounds like your typical Disney story, and a wholly unoriginal concept, but surprise! ABC's new fairy-tales-with-a-twist series Once Upon a Time is hands down the most mind-blowingly unique new show coming out this fall, perhaps because it's penned by two of the dudes responsible for Lost. (Unless you were one of the people who hated Lost's ending. Then forget we ever said it.)

But is Once Upon a Time really worth your precious time?

Find out as our 2011 Fall TV Preview launches today with the new drama we're (spoiler alert!) most excited about...
    WWK Fall TV Preview 2011

    Once Upon a Time (ABC)

    Premieres: Sunday, Oct. 23, 8 p.m.
Time-Slot Competition: The Amazing Race (CBS), The Simpsons (Fox), Sunday Night Football (NBC)
Cast: Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Robert Carlyle, Lana Parrilla, Jamie Dornan, Jared Gilmore, Josh Dallas, Raphael Sbarge
Status: We've seen the pilot episode.

While many of ABC's new comedies are are, um, lackluster at best (stand by for the cringe-worthy deets on that when we release all our 2011 Fall TV reviews), the Alphabet net has certainly taken a chance with Once Upon a Time. With cross dimensions that could only be pulled off by former Lost writers, this enchanting show shifts between Fairy Tale Land and the dreary (plus magically cursed) town of Storybrooke and tackles what happens beyond the "happily ever after" of the stories we love. Viewers will discover what happens when the happy ending goes to hell in a hand basket.

The gist of the story: On orphan Emma Swan's (Jennifer Morrison) 28th birthday she is visited by a charming boy, Henry (Jared Gilmore), who tells her she is actually the daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas). No, the child is not an escapee from a nearby loony bin but he's in fact the son she gave up for adoption 10 years before. Also revealed in this fun meet cute: Emma, a jaded bail bondsperson, is the only hope of saving the whole town of amnesiac fairy-tale characters.

That's where the fun begins. Emma was not actually abandoned as a child but sent away to be protected from the Evil Queen's curse and ultimate unhappily ever after: Maine. Dun. Dun. Dun. Basically the fate of all happy endings rests on her shoulders. Her backstory is unbelievable, but any birth mother with a soul can't help but be moved by Henry's passion, and Emma is.

The characters are intriguing in both worlds. Ginnifer Goodwin enchants as Snow White and her Storybrooke counterpart, Mary Margaret. The Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) aka Regina, the mayor of Storybrooke, is not a one-dimensional villainess. She is mean, conniving, slightly heartbreaking and clearly the hero in her own story. While Emma Swan is the cool girl that you'd want to be your BFF, but she has no friends because badass orphans can't have friends.

Goodwin tells us she was on board to play the iconic princess as soon as she heard that creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz "had written something sort of Lost slash Pushing Daisies in tone" and we can echo that it's an apt description and a perfect marriage of mythology and whimsy. We are in love, but if we had to state our one major qualm with the pilot, it's that the ridiculously hot Sherriff Graham (Jamie Dornan) was not in it nearly enough. Seriously. That's our biggest problem.

In some ways you might wonder how they will carry the story through the season or even through multiple seasons, but Morrison tells us: "It's not the story of Snow White, it's: 'Why is she Snow White? Why did she fall in love with the prince? Why did the Queen hate her?'...It's filling in the blanks of all the parts of the fairy tale that we've never considered and we've never known about." With the familiar fairy tales to start the ride and two worlds to explore, we are excited to see what happens next.

Verdict: Watch. And tell your friends. Because if the series holds up to the promise of the pilot, we need 50 seasons of this magic.

2011 Pilot Quickies: My Thoughts on New ABC Shows

    By Adam Wright – September 14, 2011

    Once Upon a Time

    Timeslot: Sunday 8pm ET

What happens when the Fairy Tale world enters our Modern world? That’s the concept of the new ABC series Once Upon a Time.

I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to like this. But I ended up changing my tone.

Jennifer Morrison (aka Cameron from HOUSE) stars as Emma Swan. On her birthday, she gets a knock at her door from her son who she gave up for adoption years ago.

Emma holds the key between the Fairy Tale world and the Real World. The Fairy Tale world was put under a curse by the Queen, so there would be “no more happy endings”. Since then, all the fairy tale characters are now residence of the town of Storybrooke, and they don’t remember their identities. Now Emma turns out to be connected to the Fairy Tale world in a very cool way.

Now don’t let the theme fool you, this will please adults. Morrison’s performance is great, and she finally gets a chance to lead after years in the background on House and How I Met Your Mother. The characters and storylines are very interesting, and the writing is also strong.

I want to see more. However, I worry about the longevity of the series. You would think the writers would have to have an ending in mind, right? Can they stretch it more than 1 season? It’ll be interesting what they do.

Once Upon of Time airs on a extremely busy Sunday night (if you include Cable TV as well). I would definitely recommend catching this live, or at least PVR it.

This is actually my favorite ABC Drama Pilot out of the bunch this year.

Once Upon a Time Scoop: A Deadwood Alum Is Coming to Town

    Oct 3, 2011 08:20 PM ET
    by Natalie Abrams

Brad Dourif will guest-star on ABC's new fairy tale drama Once Upon a Time, TVGuide.com has learned.

The Deadwood alum, who most recently appeared on the Season 3 finale of Fringe, will play a beggar who befriends the evil Rumpelstiltskin (Robert Carlyle).

Executive-produced by Lost's Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis, the upcoming series tells the story of the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) casting a spell upon classic fairy tale characters who live in Storybrooke, Maine, and don't know their own true identities. Among them is Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), whose daughter Emma (Jennifer Morrison) may be the key to rescuing the town.

Once Upon a Time premieres Sunday, Oct. 23 at 8/7c on ABC.

Once Upon a Time: Jennifer Morrison Gives You a Sneak Peek at Why This Series Rocks

Today 6:00 AM PDT by Tierney Bricker

Before there was HeMo, there was JeMo, y'all. And she (Jennifer Morrison) is just one of the reasons we love ABC's new series Once Upon a Time, premiering Oct. 23.

So what can you expect from Jennifer's character Emma Swan? Why is she the key to saving a town full of fairy-tale characters (Snow White! Prince Charming!) who can't remember who they really are?

We have an exclusive video for you from JeMo herself that will give you a nice taste of what this series is all about. Coming from two of the guys who did Lost, this series has plenty of twists, and a few surprising connections...

    www.megavideo.com/?v=RR9TZM7O

Emma is dragged to the town of Storybrooke by Henry, the charming son she gave up for adoption, who tells her she is the daughter of Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Charles). Emma, a jaded bail bondsperson, naturally thinks he's crazy, but eventually finds herself swept into the mystery and drama of the town.

"The town itself has so many mysteries and things to unlock,"Jennifer explains, "and now you have this woman living in a town that has very, very deep dark secrets and there's a built-in conflict between the evil queen (Lana Parrilla), who is the mayor of Storybrooke, and Emma." Yes, threatening someone to leave your town or you'll destroy them definitely qualifies as a conflict.

Created by Lost's Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, it's safe to say Once Upon a Time is not just a tale for children. "People think fairy tales are for kids," Morrison says with a laugh. "But this is fairy tale characters in grownup situations."

To learn more about Emma Swan and Storybrooke, watch out exclusive video above, which also features a sneak peek at the premiere episode, which was so good, we named the series one of our favorite new shows of the fall.

Once Upon a Time premieres Sunday, Oct. 23 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

EXCLUSIVE: Meet Prince Charming from 'Once Upon a Time'

by Maggie Furlong, posted Oct 4th 2011 9:00AM

Dashing good looks, skills with a sword and a kiss that can wake a sleeping beauty ... Prince Charming doesn't exist today. Or does he?

ABC's new fanciful drama 'Once Upon a Time' (premieres Sun., Oct. 23, 8PM ET) takes a look at what it'd be like if things didn't always end happily ever after, and what would happen if our favorite fairytale characters took up residence in the real world. For those fans of romance, the show brings us two different Prince Charmings to enjoy: the classic fairytale archetype, and a modern day version who, when we meet him, is known only as John Doe.

Check out this exclusive video to see more footage of TV's newest charmer and interview highlight with star Josh Dallas.

And as huge fans of Kristin’s we couldn’t imagine anyone better to come in and bring her to life.”

Scoop: Once Upon a Time Bewitched by Buffy Alum Emma Caulfield

    Anya would be so proud!

Beloved Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Emma Caulfield is venturing into the supernatural world once more — this time as an infamous fairy-tale staple on ABC’s Once Upon a Time (premiering Sunday, Oct. 23 at 8/7c)

TVLine has learned that the actress will play a role we first told you about, the “incredibly scary and frightening” Blind Witch from Hansel and Gretel. Caulfield excitedly revealed the news via Twitter on Monday.

The casting marks both Buffy and Life Unexpected reunions for the actress, who worked with Once consulting producer Liz Tigelaar on the latter and co-exec producer Jane Espenson on the former, making this news all the more sweet.

Caulfield joins Once‘s already packed Season 1 guest cast that includes Kristin Bauer Van Straten (True Blood) as Maleficent, Alan Dale (Lost) as Prince Charming’s father, Jessy Schram (Falling Skies) as the beloved Cinderella, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) as the sidekick to Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen, and David Anders (The Vampire Diaries) as a small town doctor.
