The Miracle Worker is a cycle of 20th century dramatic works derived from Helen Keller's autobiography The Story of My Life. Each of the various dramas describe the relationship between Keller — a deafblind and initially almost feral child — and Annie Sullivan, the teacher who introduced her to education, activism, and international celebrity

Its first realization was a 1957 Playhouse 90 broadcast written by William Gibson and starring Teresa Wright as Sullivan and Patricia McCormack as Keller. Gibson adapted his teleplay for a 1959 Broadway production with Anne Bancroft as Sullivan and Patty Duke as Keller. The two reprised their roles for the 1962 feature film.

It was remade for television in 1979, with Patty Duke as Sullivan, Melissa Gilbert as Keller, and Diana Muldaur and Charles Siebert in supporting roles. In 2000, another television production was made, directed by Nadia Tass and starring Alison Elliott as Sullivan and Hallie Kate Eisenberg as Keller, with David Strathairn and Lucas Black in supporting roles. A 1984 made-for-television sequel, Helen Keller: The Miracle Continues, starred Blythe Danner as Sullivan, Mare Winningham as Keller, and Jack Warden as Mark Twain.

Video: A Blind Photographer and ‘The Miracle Worker’

    By ERIK PIEPENBURG

When the coming revival of William Gibson’s “Miracle Worker,” starring Alison Pill as Annie Sullivan and Abigail Breslin as Helen Keller, opens in March, a blind photographer will have helped bring it to Broadway.

John Dugdale, whose blindness came as the result of an AIDS-related stroke in 1993, works with an assistant, Dan Levin, who helps him shoot using an antique large-format camera.

“All I have to do is speak out loud with the slightest direction, and he makes the photographs with me in a way that I feel like I’m making them myself,” Mr. Dugdale said of Mr. Levin.

In this exclusive video, produced by Art Meets Commerce, a theatrical advertising agency, Mr. Dugdale talks about the challenges of being a blind photographer, and offers a look at his photo shoot with Ms. Pill and Ms. Breslin. (More information about Mr. Dugdale and his work is at his Web site.)

The hiring of Mr. Dugdale comes as protests have trailed the show. Last October, the Alliance for Inclusion in the Arts, an advocacy group for blind and deaf actors, among others, opposed a decision by the producers to not audition actresses for the role of Helen who shared her disabilities. (Readers’ comments on the controversy are here.)

In December, the producers announced that Kyra Ynez, a vision-impaired 10-year-old, would be Ms. Breslin’s understudy.

“The Miracle Worker” begins previews at Circle in the Square on Feb. 12 and opens on March 3.

The Miracle Worker Official site has posted the first rehearsal day clip Jennifer speaks

    www.miracleworkeronbroadway.com/

    CITAZIONE
Jennifer Morrison: This is the very, very first day. We’re all meeting each other for the first time, so we’re sort of getting to know each a little bit. Everybody’s excited to be here; everybody’s excited to meet each other.

Matthew Modine: Look at all the people required to create a production for a Broadway play. It’s extraordinary, isn’t it?

Alison Pill: We just had our Equity Union meeting, we’re “meeting and greeting” our creative team and seeing what the final product is envisioned to be. It’s a very exciting day.

Kate Whoriskey: As an audience member, you’ll be able to see both the action and other audience members, so there’s a real intimacy. There’s kind of a pulse, when everything’s really alive that we can all participate in and the whole room becomes engaged in the story.

Jennifer Morrison: It’s a story that’s really moving and, I think, still relevant today. I’m excited to see how audiences respond to it when we open.

Abigail Breslin: I’ve never done Broadway before, so to get to do it and play one of my heroes is really exciting. But I’m just nervous, you know, and need to get everything down by the time we have to open.

Alison Pill: It feels incredible and terrifying. I can’t wait to really begin to get to the heart of it.

Kate Whoriskey: When I read it, I was overwhelmed by the meaning of it. And I felt like there was something wonderful about a family who was willing to galvanize to do anything to get this child to learn how to speak.

Elizabeth Franz: You’re going to have to think about what it’s like to be that child, and also about Annie and what she survived.

Matthew Modine: You see how important it is not to lose faith and to continue to have courage in life.

Abigail Breslin: She never gave up on herself and nobody ever gave up on her. I think that’s really an important lesson.
