Photo Coverage: THE MIRACLE WORKER Meets the Press!

The starry cast of THE MIRACLE WORKER have recently got to work on the production, which begins performances on Friday, February 12 at the Circle in the Square Theatre on Broadway. The show, starring Abigail Breslin, Allison Pill, Matthew Modine, Jennifer Morrison and Elizabeth Franz officially opens on March 3, 2010.

This first revival of William Gibson's THE MIRACLE WORKER as the Tony Award winning play celebrates its 50th Anniversary of opening on Broadway. Kate Whoriskey (Ruined) directs.

The production has posted new video on their website of the first rehearsal, and a special interview with John Dugdale, the blind photographer who has created the production's publicity photos. Dugdale lost his sight progressively approximately 17 years ago. Employing the cyanotype photographic process, known for its relative ease of use and aesthetic quality, he has maintained a successful career. It is this photographic process that has given THE MIRACLE WORKER its unique blue-tinted artwork.

Set in the South in the 1880s, THE MIRACLE WORKER tells the story of real-life blind and deaf Medal of Freedom winner Helen Keller, who suddenly lost her sight and hearing at the age of 19 months, and the extraordinary teacher who taught her to communicate with the world, Annie Sullivan.

THE MIRACLE WORKER originally opened at The Playhouse Theatre on October 19, 1959 and was awarded the 1960 Tony Award® for Best Play in addition to garnering leading lady Anne Bancroft a Tony Award® for Best Actress in a Play for the role of Annie Sullivan and a Theatre World Award for newcomer Patty Duke for her portrayal of Helen Keller. Both actresses received Academy Awards® for their work in the feature film adaptation.

    The Miracle Worker

    Abigail-Breslin

I got a chance to meet and interview the incredibly talented cast of the first Broadway revival of “The Miracle Worker .” Previews begin February 12, at the Circle in the Square Theater, a perfect intimate setting for this powerful play that tells the story of Helen Keller and the extraordinary teacher, Annie Sullivan, who taught her to communicate with the world.

Academy Award Nominee, Abigail Breslin, is making her Broadway debut as Helen. She says she has been inspired by Helen Keller, after first reading the book when she was 7. She is also a big, big Twilight fan! Abigail is also making a movie with Johnny Depp, coming out next year.

Alison Pill, who starred in the Oscar winning movie Milk and “In Treatment” on HBO, plays Annie Sullivan, a very emotionally and physically charged role. She says working in theater in the round is like being in a gladiator ring, and by the way, she loves the intimacy of the theater and complexity of her character.

Cast-02Jennifer Morrison of “House” fame, plays, Kate Keller, Helen’s mother, and it’s also her Broadway debut. It is her dream to be on Broadway, she has been doing theater since she was a little girl. And, all you House fans out there ... she said you will not be disappointed by her return!

Tony award winning actress Elizabeth Franz, plays Aunt Ev, and the brilliant director, Kate Whoriskey, is helping these complex women gel.

Veteran Actor Matthew Modine, plays Captain Keller, who is not sure what to make of Annie Sullivan, a northern catholic girl, coming to live with their very southern ways. He said the play is more modern then you would think and that Helen’s struggle can easily be one of this century, drugs or alcohol. Matthew is having a great time working on “projecting” his voice in the round theater. He of course is all about the environment and bicycling. You have to check out his website, he has a great reel of his work, and you can also find out more about his charities.

The Miracle Worker Returns To Broadway

    By Christopher Moore, Broadway Magazine

"I really worked hard to get a cast of people that were very honest, and could be very simple in their acting. So these very delicate moments that are being built in the round...The furthest seat back is eight seats away….what we're really wanting is actors who can really feel like they are living human beings and not on a performative proscenium stage," says Kate Whorisky, the director of the new revival of The Miracle Worker which is soon to open on Broadway.

While audiences may be familiar with the story and the subject matter, the actors and director are focused on telling the story in a way that is both truthful and relevant. The creative team and stars took time to talk with Broadway.tv and Broadway Magazine at a recent press event.

"You can expect a play in the round that is not the 50's melodrama that I think a lot of people picture when they think of 'The Miracle Worker.' It is a really intense, dark, character-driven play, that is also funny and inspiring; and a story that I think deserves to be told again," asserts the accomplished stage actress Alison Pill.

"I think that she's such an incredible person, because she really shows that nothing is impossible. She had her teacher, Ann Sullivan, and her whole family. It's about a family in crisis and how they pull through it," reflects the celebrated star Abigail Breslin on playing Helen Keller and the play.

"The issues the story tackles are very relevant to what is going on in the world right now," notes actress Jennifer Morrison. The relevance of The Miracle Worker to today's world is shared by the cast and director.

"It's great. It's a great family drama. It's not just the story of a young girl who is deaf and blind, while it may seem that way" offers Matthew Modine, as he considers the larger scope of the play which deals with a family dealing with extraordinary circumstances.

"America is always going to be drawn by that family dynamic and what does that mean," observes Jennifer Morrison.

"Look at the struggle we're going through in our lives, in America, in the world today," notes Elizabeth Franz.

Of course, the inspiring story of Helen Keller centers on two female leads. The new Broadway revival offers two of the most celebrated young actresses of our generation-Allison Pill and Abigail Breslin. While the story is challenging, clearly the working process for the production has been very positive.

"Alison Pill is a tremendous young actress, as is Abigail Breslin. A lot of people know them from their film work. Alison from 'Milk,' and Abigail from 'Little Miss Sunshine.' It's great working with this young director Kate Whorisky. I think that it's wonderful having a women direct this play," reflects Matthew Modine on the talented creative team involved in this revival of The Miracle Worker.

"Abbie and I have so much fun. I love working with her, she's an incredible actress. You know, young or not, she's just one of the great actresses working today," shares Alison Pill.
