Fall TV First Impression: ABC's Once Upon a Time Is Fairy Ambitious

The broadcast networks have more than 30 shows debuting this fall, including Steven Spielberg’s dino-mite Terra Nova, J.J. Abrams’ Person of Interest, and a U.S. adaptation of the UK’s Prime Suspect. To help you prep for fall, TVLine is offering First Impressions based on the not-for-review pilots. Next on our list is…

THE SHOW | ABC’s Once Upon a Time (Sundays at 8/7c, premiering October 23)

THE COMPETITION | NBC Sunday Night Football, CBS’ The Amazing Race, and Fox’s The Simpsons/Allen Gregory (new)

THE CAST | Jennifer Morrison (House) as Emma Swan, Ginnifer Goodwin (Big Love) as Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard, Lana Parrilla (Swingtown) as Evil Queen/Regina, Jared Gilmore as Henry, Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting) as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold, and others

THE SET-UP | It’s tricky, so let’s see if I can boil it down (and not spoil the many cool twists). Once upon a time, in the Enchanted Forest… the Evil Queen crashed Snow White’s wedding to Prince Charming with the news that she had cast a powerful curse that would rob everyone of “everything they loved” and thus deprive them of their happy endings. Translated: The memorable fairy tale figures are transported to Storybrooke, Maine, a town frozen in time, and with none of their past memories intact. Flash forward (this is from two writers of Lost, after all) to now, where a 10-year-old lad named Henry tracks down his birth mom, bad-ass bail bondswoman Emma Swan, to bring her home with him to Storybrooke with the hope that she can make things right. Thing is, the woman who raised Henry is a real w-i-t-c-h — the Evil Queen’s alter ego, Regina, aka the town mayor. (Then again, Henry’s schoolteacher is a real princess.)

THE GOOD | Once Upon a Time is shaping up to be the most polarizing pilot among those of us who cover TV. Basically, you either found it to be magically delicious, or you failed to fall under its spell. I fall into the first camp — a gut feeling that was confirmed upon my second viewing. The set-up of the enchanted backstory is thrilling at times, with Goodwin and Parilla seemingly born to bite into the apple roles of Snow White and Evil Queen. (Plus, it’s just plain fun to catch glimpses of Grumpy, Jiminy Cricket and Tinkerbell.) Morrison does a nice job of mirroring the viewer’s disbelief of this fantastical dilemma — and Emma looks like she could become a worthy adversary for Regina — while Carlyle is slithery-good in both of his roles. Plus, did I mention all the Lost references sprinkled throughout? (Look at the clock tower in the clip below.) Now, with all of that said….

THE… COULD-BE-BETTER | I need to see Episode 2, because — as I have contended to peers — I don’t believe the pilot showed us what the series will really look like, given its requirement to deliver so much backstory from once upon a time. Visually, Storybrooke appears a bit bland; maybe they filmed on an overcast day, or is it to suggest the residents’ sad destiny? Lastly, the premiere isn’t until late October? Boo.

THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE | This is a show worth checking out, if only because it’s trying to pull off something special, and given its “out there” nature, it’ll need to open big and hold tight to its genre-TV audience.

    CITAZIONE
Question: Is it wrong of me to want scoop on Once Upon a Time before it’s even started? — Helene
Ausiello: Yes. But I’ll give it to you, anyway. ABC’s upcoming fairy tale is adding a new recurring character to its canvas, the Magic Mirror in Storybrooke, aka Sidney in the real world. As you’d expect, MM is a consultant to the Evil Queen. His counterpart similarly sucks up to dragon lady Regina as a staff reporter for her Daily Mirror newspaper. And if the show hasn’t already called Ugly Betty alum Michael Urie about this part, its powers that be are mad, I tell you, mad as hatters. Speaking of Once Upon…

Question: I’m surprised after reading your Top 10 list that Fox’s New Girl is nowhere to be found. To me, it easily looks like the best new comedy based on the previews I’ve seen. Is the pilot really disappointing? —Wendy
Ausiello: Just watched it over the weekend and I’ve updated my Top 10 accordingly! You’ll also notice Once Upon a Time jumped from No. 6 to No. 4. Turns out ABC’s fairytale saga is even better the second time around.

EXCLUSIVE: Paula Marshall to Work Her Magic on 'Once Upon a Time'

by Maureen Ryan, posted Jul 27th 2011 9:05PM

Paula Marshall has been cast as a "badass" character on 'Once Upon a Time,' the upcoming fairy tale drama from former 'Lost' executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

Marshall, a busy actress who has appeared in everything from 'Cupid' to 'Californication,' will play Malificent, the nemesis of Sleeping Beauty. "She's a badass and she's also the rival" of Lana Parrilla's evil queen character, Kitsis said.

Starring Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Morrison, Robert Carlyle, Josh Dallas and Parrilla, Giancarlo Esposito of 'Breaking Bad' will also appear in the recurring role of the Magic Mirror in 'Once', as TV Line reported earlier this month.

I spoke to Kitsis and Horowitz at length in their 'Once' office (where I admired the 'Lost' posters you see below), and I'll publish the majority of that interview closer to the show's Oct. 23 premiere date. But I can't resist sharing a little of what they had to say about the show's central concept, which features characters in a fairy tale kingdom where the evil queen is up to no good, and characters in a modern-day town where things are stranger than they first appear.

Kitsis and Horowitz said they first had the 'Once' idea eight years ago, when the fairy tale pilot didn't sell. Spending six years on 'Lost' helped them get to the point where they felt as though they could tell this unusual story the right way, they said. "'Lost' was the greatest job ever and ... if we were going to go back to TV and back to working really hard, it had to be something we loved and were willing to give up everything to do," Kitsis said of 'Once.'

"Some people don't like fantasy, some people don't like this world, but that's the game," he added. "For everyone who says 'Sgt. Pepper's' is the greatest album in the world, someone is willing to tell you it's the worst. You have to realize, at some point, you're never going to create something everyone's going to like. So you just have to create something, at the end of the day, you like."

"We've researched all sorts of things," Horowitz said. But "we don't want to retell [fairy tales]. We want to take what is that shared cultural knowledge as the jumping off point to tell hopefully new" stories about characters with problems -- loneliness, fear, a desire for connection -- that aren't unusual at all.

"Why does [the queen] hate Snow White so much? How did she become evil? Why is Grumpy grumpy? Why is Geppetto so lonely that he had to make a boy out of wood?," Kitsis said. "We're not interested in retelling fairy tales -- we're interested in the parts that have holes that need filling in or the parts you've never thought about."

Anders first tweeted the news, joking about the secrecy: "Can't tell u anymore as it's a secret so SHHH &/or tell the world." He will first appear in Episode 3.

The series, executive-produced by Lost's Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, stars Jennifer Morrison as Emma, Snow White's long-lost daughter. QUOTE
Question: Got anything about ABC’s Once Upon a Time? —Danny
Ausiello: Two things: It’s so good I watched the pilot twice (and that almost never happens). Also, the showrunners told TVLine’s Matt Mitovich that they initially reached out to Lady Gaga to make a cameo as The Blue Fairy in the pilot, but they never heard back. Mother Monster’s loss is Canadian actress Keegan Connor Tracy’s gain!

Once Upon a Time - Casting News - Jessy Schram joins cast

ABC's "Once Upon a Time" tells the story of a bail bonds collector, Emily (Jennifer Morrison) who is sought out by her long lost son because he believes she's from an alternate universe and is the missing daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming.

Their town of Storybrooke, Maine, is inhabited by many fairy tale characters in their modern-day incarnations, and the latest to join the show is "Falling Skies" star Jessy Schram, Zap2it has exclusively confirmed.

25-year-old Schram will be playing the Cinderella character in an early episode. Her impressive TV resume includes Hallmark Channel's "Jane Doe" movies and a memorable turn as Hannah on the second season of "Veronica Mars."

Also set to guest star on "Once Upon a Time" this season is "The Vampire Diaries'" David Anders as a doctor who dates Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin)

I know the title is about House but this is indeed about OUAT

Will Dr. Cameron Be Called Back to House? Jennifer Morrison Tells All—Plus Previews Her New Show!

Ping! Paging Dr. Cameron to House for what could very well be the final season. Dr. Cameron to the final season of House to wrap up your storyline. Thank you.

OK, so that was us trying to page Jennifer Morrison hospital-style so she can come back to House for her send-off. Do you think it worked? Well, we chatted with Morrison at the ABC TCA party, and she not only gave us her thoughts on coming back to House, but she also pretty much admitted that if she could marry her new show Once Upon a Time, she totally would…

But before we get to her loving on her new fairy tale role, let's talk about the fact that Morrison would "love" to come back for the (maybe?) final season of House. "I feel like it was such an incredible part of my life. Six years worth. I think it would be a lot of fun to have some sort of wrap-up closure," she tells us. "(Creator) David Shore is such an incredible writer, and I know he has such a strong vision for the show that whatever he thinks is right is what he will do and it will be wonderful."

So, we're basically leaving it up to Shore to realize that what's "right" is bring back Dr. Cameron one final time. We're writing up the memo to him now.

Morrison's new show, Once Upon a Time, is one of the most anticipated new shows of the fall. And while she is no stranger to being on well-received TV shows (How I Met Your Mother), Morrison is still relieved her new project is loved. "It's a really nice feeling. I just loved the script so much! It was so good and every element was so incredible that I would have done it no matter what, but it's always the icing on top that people enjoy it," she says. And what a big role to play: the child of Snow White and Prince Charming. "I have some big parents to live up to," she tells us with a laugh.

The gang at OUAT are currently in production, and if you love the pilot (you totally will), Morrison promises you will fall even harder for the episodes that follow. "We felt like, 'how are we ever going to live up to the pilot?' because we thought that script was so great, but every script just keeps getting better," she reveals. "We get just as excited to read the scripts as we hope people will get excited to see the episodes."

We anticipate people will be plenty excited for Once Upon a Time.

Check out our full interview with Jennifer below, and then head down to the comments to predict if we'll see Dr. Cameron one more time in the halls of Princeton-Plainsboro.

    E! Online

You're going to have to check the video for the interview

Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz discuss the fairytale mashup of 'Once Upon A Time'

Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are best known for their work on LOST, such a successful series that rumors have flown about a theme park being created out of the imagery and intricacy of the storylines. Though they have often publicly laughed off those rumors, something about the idea seems to be ingrained in their minds. After all, their newest ABC drama, Once Upon a Time, takes a magical look at famed fairytale characters we actually can visit at an already existing theme park that is advertised as the place where "dreams do come true." And in fitting with that theme, Kitsis and Horowitz' message for Once Upon a Time is not the redemption factor of LOST but instead simply one of hope.

"For us, that’s what a fairytale is. It’s that ability to think your life will get better. It’s why you buy a lottery ticket-- because if you win you get to tell your boss that you’re quitting and you get to move to Paris, and that’s Cinderella, right? One day she’s sweeping up and the next she’s going to the ball. Adam and I just wanted to write about something hopeful that for one hour a week you put everything aside and you have that feeling," Kitsis told LA TV Insider Examiner during the D23 Expo in Anaheim this weekend.

Cinderella (Jessy Schram) won't enter into the picture until episode four, Kitsis pointed out, but she is sure to be an integral part of the Once Upon a Time universe. In fact, just before the weekend they shot her wedding scene with two hundred extras and yet another prince (Neighbours star Tim Phillipps).

"I don’t really want to spoil how [we meet her]," Kitsis grinned, "but you know, one of the things we’re doing with this show is introducing mash-ups. So if you notice in the pilot, there’s a war council with Grumpy and Geppetto, and Pinocchio, so we’re kind of presenting to the world a mash-up, and she’ll come in in that way."

Since characters from different fairytales all co-exist in Once Upon A Time, don't expect to necessarily see everyone from each individual story, either. Cinderella can live in this world without seeing her evil stepmother and stepsisters, for example. But will she? The guys remained coy, simply saying "You never know."

For now, the focus is on the earlier characters-- Kitsis said they are "starting in 1937 and working their way up"-- but if Once Upon a Time becomes a hit, and ABC wishes for more than just the initial twelve episodes currently granted, the guys are confident they will be able to incorporate other characters, regardless of what world they currently live in or how recently they have been seen elsewhere.

"One of the things that’s fun for us is in this world is thinking up ways different characters can interact in ways they never have before," Horowitz pointed out.

And that means the princesses so many of us grew up with and came to know, love, and maybe not quite admire are now more fully-fleshed out role models. Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin), for example, picks up a sword in Kitsis and Horowitz' fairytale; she is ready, willing, and able to fight to find a way to save her people from the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla)'s spell instead of simply "hiding behind her husband."

"They’re strong women; they’re inspirational," Kitsis shared of all of his female characters. "We’re not interested in telling damsel in distress stories. It’s not as relevant."

But whereas LOST dealt with oh, so many father issues, these Disney fairytales often have an absent mother and an "evil" stepmother at the center of the drama and anguish, so the women of Kitsis and Horowitz' fairytales, though strong and at times fiercely independent, will be flawed, as well.

"It’s something that’s threaded throughout," Horowitz said of the issues with maternal figures, "but I think even more than fathers or mothers, the show is about family, and it’s about with families or without families, finding each other."

Pilot Watch #ONCEUPONATIME (ABC) - What happens when the Fairy Tale world enters our Modern world? That's the concept of the new ABC series Once Upon a Time.

I'll admit, I didn't expect to like this. But I ended up changing my tone.

Jennifer Morrison (aka Cameron from HOUSE) stars as Emma Swan. On her birthday, she gets a knock at her door from her son who she gave up for adoption years ago.

Emma holds the key between the Fairy Tale world and the Real World. The Fairy Tale world was put under a curse by the Queen, so there would be "no more happy endings". Since then, all the fairy tale characters are now residence of the town of Storybrooke, and they don't remember their identities. Now Emma turns out to be connected to the Fairy Tale world in a very cool way.

Now don't let the theme fool you, this will please adults. Morrison's performance is great, and she finally gets a chance to lead after years in the background on House and How I Met Your Mother. The characters and storylines are very interesting, and the writing is also strong.

I want to see more. However, I worry about the longevity of the series. You would think the writers would have to have an ending in mind, right? Can they stretch it more than 1 season? It'll be interesting what they do.

Once Upon of Time airs on a extremely busy Sunday night (if you include Cable TV as well). I would definitely recommend catching this live, or at least PVR it.

This is actually my favorite ABC Drama Pilot out of the bunch this year.
