Castle is an American comedy-drama television series, broadcast on ABC and produced by ABC Studios. Castle premiered in 2009; the final episode of the second season aired on May 17, 2010. It was announced on March 30, 2010 that the show was renewed for a third season, with a 22 episode order. 
Premise
Castle follows Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle, a famous mystery novelist who has killed off his main character in his book series and has writer's block. Castle is called in to help the NYPD solve a copy-cat murder based on one of his novels. Stana Katic stars opposite as the determined detective Kate Beckett. Castle, who becomes interested in Beckett as a potential character for a new book series, uses his contacts and receives permission to continue accompanying Beckett while investigating cases. Castle decides to use Beckett as the model for the main character of his next book series, starring "Nikki Heat". Beckett, an avid reader of Castle's books, is initially disapproving of having Castle shadow her on her cases, but later warms up and recognizes Castle as a useful resource in solving crimes. While technically a drama series, Castle also features comedy and romantic tension.
Cast
* Nathan Fillion as Richard Castle – a famous author, who, after having just killed off his most famous character, Derek Storm, and being nagged by his publisher/ex-wife, is pulled in by NYPD Detective Kate Beckett to help with a copy-cat case and discovers a new source of inspiration in her. Castle now has the opportunity to use his knowledge and skills to help solve murders.
* Stana Katic as Detective Kate Beckett – a homicide detective with the NYPD. She is a first-class investigator who has gained a reputation as a detective who's intrigued by unusual cases. She joined the force after her mother was murdered and the case was never solved.
* Jon Huertas as Detective Javier Esposito – works in the homicide division with Kevin Ryan as part of Beckett's team. He is always ready with a sardonic comment to keep Beckett on her toes and enjoys the way Castle riles her up. He and Ryan are friends, even though they constantly argue about obscure facts.
* Seamus Dever as Detective Kevin Ryan – also works alongside Esposito as part of Beckett's team. He and Esposito regularly tease Beckett, but they are incredibly protective of her and ultimately treat her like one of the guys. The character was a late addition to the show, as the original presentation pilot was only 37 minutes long.
* Tamala Jones as Dr. Lanie Parish – a medical examiner who has a friendly outlook. As a friend of Beckett's, she is one of the few people Beckett can talk to easily and without reservations. She is also one of the few people who notices the personal connection between Beckett and Castle, and urges her to act on it.
* Ruben Santiago-Hudson as Captain Roy Montgomery – Beckett's boss who appreciates Beckett's determination and diligence but maintains a close watch to make sure the investigations go smoothly. He is amused by how much Castle annoys Beckett, but also appreciates how effective the two are when they work together.
* Molly Quinn as Alexis Castle – Castle's fifteen-year-old daughter, who is often noted to be more mature and responsible than her father. She is very bright and enjoys school. Her social and interpersonal issues often parallel some aspect of the case Castle and Beckett are investigating, while Castle sometimes asks her opinion on the motivation for some actions committed by the killers he hunts (such as who someone might ask for money).
* Susan Sullivan as Martha Rodgers – an actress on and off Broadway, is Castle's mother and lives with him and her granddaughter Alexis. She helps her son through the difficulties of raising a teenage girl (even one as mature as Alexis), but is also shown to have an active social life. She lives with Castle partly because a previous husband absconded with all her savings.

* Arye Gross as Dr. Sidney Perlmutter – a crusty medical examiner who assists on some of Beckett's cases.
* Michael Trucco as Detective Tom Demming – a handsome robbery detective with whom Beckett becomes involved.
* Monet Mazur as Gina Cowell – Castle's publisher and second ex-wife.
Real-life writers Stephen J. Cannell, James Patterson, and Michael Connelly appear as themselves during periodic games of poker at Castle's apartment. Typically, they discuss Castle and Beckett's current case, and tease Castle about his involvement with Beckett.

Keck's Exclusives: Death Rocks the Castle Family

SPOILER (click to view)In the second episode of Castle's upcoming third season, an extended member of the Castle family will die.
"As in real life, death is sad, but it makes us all appreciate what we have around us a little bit more," series star Nathan Fillion told me after Castle's Comic-Con panel. Added series creator Andrew Marlowe: "This will bring the family closer together."
So who's the unlucky soul? I promised not to say. But I can confirm it's one of these three people: Chet, the never-seen boyfriend of Castle's mother, Martha (Susan Sullivan), Meredith (Darby Stanchfield), Castle's first ex-wife and Alexis' mother, who has been living in Los Angeles, or Gina (Monet Mazur), Castle's second ex-wife with whom he reconnected in the season finale.
This may or may not be a clue to the victim's identity: The Season 3 premiere opens with Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) and her team arresting Castle after discovering him hovering over a dead body.
Additionally, Marlowe told me he plans to delve into the mystery of Castle's paternity, though probably not until Season 4. Nathan's already campaigning for his longtime idol Christopher Walken to play his pops. "I met him one time and I'll never forget it," says Nathan, who treated me to a pretty sweet imitation of Walken.
And good news for actress Tamala Jones, who says the cops will soon discover that her character, Lanie, has become romantically involved with Esposito (Jon Huertas). She will also be forming a closer after-hours relationship with Beckett. "I also hear there will be an episode totally dedicated to Lanie's background and all of her relationships," says Tamala, who is launching a campaign to get The L Word's Pam Grier on the show as her mama.

"Part of our metaphor in the early stretch of the season is that these two people, who many feel belong together, 'married' the wrong people," Marlowe says. "So, we're rooting for them to wake up and find each other again."
