Ratings: Dancing, Castle, Two and a Half Men Up; Lone Star Fizzles + The Event, Hawaii Five-0 & Chuck

ABC had a nice night with the preliminary metered market household rating for Dancing with the Stars up 37%, and Castle up 33% vs. last year’s premiere Monday. (8.0 household rating vs. 6.0).

Chuck started around where it finished last year (a 3.8 household rating — do not confuse these with 18-49 demographic which will come later). The Event nearly doubled Chuck with a 7.5 household rating in the metered markets. Chase dropped down to a 4.8 at 10pm. But that’s better than the news at FOX where House was down 14% vs. the first hour of last year’s two hour premiere to a 7.4. Again, we have to wait for the demos, because these metered market numbers can be deceiving. On the other hand, the somewhat widely praised Lone Star didn’t get out of the gate well scoring a mere 2.8 household rating. While these numbers can be deceiving, they probably can’t be that deceiving and that’s a pretty bad sign.

The news looks better at CBS where the metered market results were all up vs. last year except Rules of Engagement being down 5% vs. the premiere of Accidentally on Purpose. Hawaii Five-0 was up 5% vs. last year’s premiere of CSI: Miami to a 9.8 rating. Again, we need to take a wait and see approach, because it’s the demos that matter.

I didn't watch Chase, but I didn't hear anything good about it.

I'm so happy Castle's numbers went up. YAY :D

House gets what it deserves :P When there was a just hint of House/Cam romance in the season 3 premiere, over 17 million people watched. It was the highest season premiere of all seasons. They promoted Huddy like crazy, didn't even really bother with MEDICINE; you know the thing that the show's supposed to be about, and they get 7 millions less viewers. Ha!
I will not deny it, I'm a bit gloating right now :D

I'm here to share your gloating Pandora :haha:

BTW, this is how ratings work

Outrunning The Bear: Only Relative Ratings Matter To Your Favorite TV Shows

As the new broadcast television season begins, so do the fan laments over their favorite shows.

“Oh no! It needs to get a 2.0 rating to survive!”

“That’s too much of a drop, it’ll never make it!”

“Look at how well Big Bang Theory did, my show’s a goner!”

Fortunately for fans of individual TV shows, their renewal and cancellation decisions are a lot like the old joke about two guys being chased by a bear.

You don’t have to outrun the bear, you just have to outrun the other guy!

In the broadcast TV world, for scripted shows “the other guy” is the other scripted shows on the same network. And you don’t have to outrun them all, even being a little below average in the adults 18-49 ratings (~10%) for your network still means pretty certain renewal.

Edit: Of course, it’s the absolute ratings that matter to each network’s bottom line. So when all the shows on a particular network have ratings drops, it’s not bad news for any one of the shows in particular, but it is bad news for the network.

    Source

In short, If House is FOX's highest-rated scripted show it doesn't matter how poor it does against other Networks' shows.

    QUOTE (pandora1308 @ 22/9/2010, 13:25)
I didn't watch Chase, but I didn't hear anything good about it.

I watched it...dialogue was very cheesy, and the storyline was very predictable. Then again, I'd seen most of this pilot episode in teasers the network had posted online, so maybe that was the problem. I'll probably give it one more chance. If it doesn't improve, I'll just watch the episode JMo is in and that's it.

TV Ratings Monday: Lone Star Flat Out Dead, Chuck, The Event, Chase, Five-0 All Fall

    By Bill Gorman
    – September 28, 2010

    image

Even with all the attempts to “save” it, Fox’s critical darling Lone Star fell to a time zone adjusted* 1.0 adults 18-49 rating from a 1.3 rating last week (*that removes the effects of the 3 minute House overrun to 9:03 last night). The fork stuck in it last week is still there, and it’s still done.

Earlier on Fox, House fell 10% to a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating.

Note that only Fox’s ratings have been timezone adjusted. the other nets ratings will see adjustments in the final ratings due later today. (lots of notes in todays post)

Among shows not previously certain to be cancelled, NBC’s The Event fell 19% to a 2.9 adults 18-49 rating, and Chase fell 9% to a 2.1 adults 18-49 rating. Chuck didn’t help its case, falling 5% to a 1.9 adults 18-49 rating.

On CBS, How I Met Your Mother increased 6% to a 3.8 adults 18-49 rating. Rules Of Engagement was up 3% to a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating. Two And A Half Men slipped 2% to a 4.8 adults 18-49 rating. Mike & Molly fell 5% to a 3.7 adults 18-49 rating. Hawaii Five-0 fell 10% to a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating.

On ABC, Dancing With The Stars fell 6% to a 4.8 adults 18-49 rating, while Castle jumped 19% to a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating. Do not be fooled by the ABC fast affiliate results, Monday Night Football was on the ABC affiliate in Green Bay, see below.

On the CW, 90210 scored a 1.8 rating for the CW target women 18-34 even with last Monday, and Gossip Girl drew a 2.1 rating for women 18-34 down 16% from last Monday.

I don’t view any second week drops of 10% or less to be particularly alarming for any individual show’s prospects, the ratings relative to its network peers are far more important.

Notes: House was scheduled to run from 8-9:03pm, and Lone Star from 9:03-10pm, but the numbers for Fox above have that overrun factored out. Also, the Monday Night Football game aired on the ABC affiliate in Green Bay instead of DWTS and Castle, so those shows ratings are more than typically likely to be adjusted downward in the final ratings. Last season, when Green Bay had the Monday night game against the Vikings (and Brett Favre) Castle was adjusted from a 3.0 to a 2.2 in the final ratings. Unlikely the effect this year will be as large (no Favre), but you have been warned.

Late night ratings are below the primetime ratings table.

Overnight broadcast primetime ratings for Monday, September 27, 2010:

TV ratings: 'Dancing With the Stars' up, new shows all down

    September 28, 2010 1:04 PM ET
audrina-dwts-0927.jpgFast National ratings for Monday, Sept. 27, 2010

The second Monday the TV season saw every new show take a dip in the ratings, while "Dancing With the Stars" actually improved some in total viewers leading ABC to a big win for the night.

"Mike & Molly" held up the best of the newcomers, falling by a little over a million viewers and two tenths of a point in adults 18-49 compared to last week. "Hawaii Five-0" lost about 1.5 million viewers, while "The Event" was down by about 2 million people. FOX's "Lone Star" didn't make any sort of comeback either.

ABC led the night with 18.5 million viewers and an 11.8 rating/18 share in households. CBS (11.15 million, 6.9/11) came in second. FOX (6.92 million, 4.2/6) and NBC (6.89 million, 4.1/6) finished in a dead heat for third place, while The CW (1.9 million, 1.3/2) was off slightly from last week.

The Alphabet also won the adults 18-49 demographic with a 4.3 rating. CBS grabbed second with a 3.7. FOX's 2.5 was good enough for third, beating out NBC's 2.3. The CW scored a 1.0 in the demo.

TV Ratings Monday: The Event Drops; Chuck Tops Chase; Lie to Me Premieres

    By Robert Seidman – October 5, 2010

    image

ABC won the night in adults 18-49 and total viewers with Dancing with the Stars and Castle. Dancing was down 10% with adults 18-49 vs last Monday to a 4.3 between 8pm-10pm. But Castle was up 7% to a 3.0. Please note that any DWTS overrun is likely to reduce Castle’s numbers by ~0.1 or so in the finals. Also note that I’m not sure which affiliate carried the Monday Night Football game in Boston and other New England markets (in Miami it was on the CW) and that might cause small adjustments to tonight’s numbers in the finals, too.

As predicted, Chase got between Chuck and the cancellation bear. Last night Chuck’s 1.9 rating with adults 18-49 was flat with last week’s overnight rating (though last week it bumped up to a 2.0 in the final numbers). Chase dropped from a 2.1 preliminary adults 18-49 rating last week to a 1.7 last night. Chase wasn’t helped out by The Event dropping from a 2.9 last week all the way down to a 2.4 this week.

Lie to Me’s premiere was modest, though 22% better than its summer average, and more than 100% better than last week’s 1.0 for Lone Star. House rose 0.1 with adults 18-49 from last week to a 3.9.

CBS saw declines with How I Met Your Mother (down 0.4 to a 3.4 adults 18-49), Rules of Engagement (down 0.2 to a 3.0 with adults 18-49) and Two and a Half Men (down 0.3 to a 4.5 adults 18-49 rating) but Mike & Molly was up 0.1 with adults 18-49 and Hawaii Five-0 was flat vs. last week’s preliminary number.

Over on the CW Gossip Girl saw season highs in adults 18-34 (1.8/5), women 18-34 (2.8/7) and total viewers (2.1mil), but note that in Miami Monday Night Football ran on the local CW affiliate so the numbers could change in the finals.

Late night data is below the primetime table.

TV ratings: 'Dancing' stays on top Monday; 'The Event' erodes some more

    October 5, 2010 11:50 AM ET

The audience for "Dancing With the Stars" fell a little bit Monday but still led ABC to the top of the night's Nielsen ratings. The other networks stayed more or less in line with last week, although "Lie to Me" improved some on "Lone Star" for FOX and "The Event" lost more than a million viewers for the second straight week on NBC.

ABC scored 17.4 million viewers and an 11.0 rating/17 share in households for the night, winning the total-viewer race by 6 million people over CBS (11.3 million, 6.9/11). FOX came in third with 8.25 million viewers and a 5.0/7, while NBC (6.2 million, 3.8/6) took fourth. The CW (2 million, 1.4/2) was up slightly over last week.

Adults 18-49 also favored ABC, which earned a 3.9 rating in the demographic. CBS, 3.6, finished second, followed by FOX at 3.0. NBC managed only a 2.0, while The CW came in at 1.1.

CBS: "How I Met Your Mother" (8.6 million, 5.3/8)/"Rules of Engagement" (8.45 million, 5.1/8)
    NBC: "Chuck" (5.4 million, 3.2/5)
    The CW: "90210" (1.9 million, 1.3/2)

FOX: "Lie to Me" season premiere (6 million, 3.6/5)

    ________

    -Ratings Breakdown:
Led by Dancing with the Stars, it was another easy overnight Monday victory for ABC, which bested second-place CBS by a considerable 70 percent. Third overall was Fox, which was pulled down by canceled Lone Star in weeks one and two of the new season, followed by uneventful NBC and perennial fifth-place occupant The CW.

Dancing with the Stars on ABC averaged a hefty 13.6 rating/20 share in the overnights from 8-10 p.m., building by half-hour as follows:

    Dancing with the Stars (ABC)
    8:00 p.m.: 12.9/19 (#1)
    8:30 p.m.: 13.5/20 (#1)
    9:00 p.m.: 13.7/19 (#1)
    9:30 p.m.: 14.3/20 (#1)

Compared to one year earlier (10.6/16 on Oct. 12, 2009), this was an increase of an unprecedented 28 percent. As for tonight’s live eviction, we will just see how many of Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino’s fans are watching. If it is not The Situation, it should be Bristol Palin. But also looking particularly weak last night was Kurt Warner. My pick to bid adieu: The Situation.

Dancing with the Stars led into Castle, which won the 10 p.m. hour in the overnights (over CBS’ Hawaii Five-O), with a 7.7/12. But retention out of the 9:30 p.m. portion of Dancing with the Stars was just 54 percent. Given the lead-in support, ABC should be doing better here.

On CBS, sitcoms How I Met Your Mother (#3: 5.6/ 8), which always resonates among adults 18-49, Rules of Engagement (#3: 5.2/ 7) and Two and a Half Men (#2: 8.9/13) were on par with early season overnight levels. But freshman entries Mike & Molly (#2: 6.9/10) and Hawaii Five-O (#2: 7.4/12) dipped to series lows from 9:30-11 p.m. Take a look at their four-week overnight tracks.

    Mike & Molly (CBS) – 9:30 p.m.
    9/20/10: 7.9/12
    9/27/10: 7.4/11
    10/04/10: 7.5/11
    10/11/10: 6.9/10

    Hawaii Five-O (CBS) – 10 p.m.
    9/20/10: 9.8/15
    9/27/10: 8.4/13
    10/04/10: 8.4/13
    10/11/10: 7.4/12

Although Mike & Molly was down by only seven percent from year-ago occupant The Big Bang Theory (7.4/11 on Oct. 12, 2009), Hawaii Five-O dipped a more extensive 17 percent from CSI: Miami (8.9/14 on Oct. 12, 2009).

Next was Fox with its combination of House (#2: 6.7/10), which could still win the 8 p.m. hour among adults 18-49, and recent returnee Lie to Me, which finished fourth at 9 p.m. with a 4.0/ 6. Although Lie to Me is a vast improvement over recent failed occupant Lone Star, retention out of the 8:30 p.m. portion of House (6.8/10) was only 59 percent. And one year earlier, Lie to Me was stronger with a 4.5/ 7 on Oct. 12, 2009. While time period improvement is a positive, Lie to Me overall is still a loser.

Over at NBC, there is problems aplenty beginning with Chuck, which is not strong enough to anchor Monday at just a fourth-place 3.4/ 5 in the overnights at 8 p.m. Without the necessary lead-in support, week four of The Event lost more steam, with a third-place 4.6/ 7 from 9-10 p.m. In just three weeks, The Event has dipped by a hefty 39 percent from its debut on Sept. 20. Take a look at the four-week overnight track:

    The Event (NBC) – 9 p.m.
    9/20/10: 7.5/11
    9/27/10: 6.3/ 9
    10/04/10: 5.3/ 8
    10/11/10: 4.7/ 7

Although The Event avoids the listing of losers for building by 39 percent from the 8:30 p.m. portion of Chuck (3.3/ 5), more erosion next week will be unforgivable.

At 10 p.m., week four of lead-out Chase finished a distant third with a series-low 3.5/ 5 in the overnights. One year earlier, former failed occupant The Jay Leno Show was stronger at a 3.7/ 6 on Oct. 12, 2009. Take a look at the three-week overnight track:

    Chase (NBC)
    9/20/10: 4.8/ 8
    9/27/10: 4.1/ 7
    10/04/10: 3.8/ 6
    10/11/10: 3.5/ 5

Last, and very least as always, was The CW’s combination of 90210 (1.7/ 2) and Gossip Girl (1.5/ 2), which never garners any leverage in the overnights. When it comes to The CW, it is all about the young female audience.

TV ratings: 'Dancing With the Stars' scores again Monday

    October 12, 2010 11:53 AM ET
Fast National ratings for Monday, Oct. 11, 2010

A highly touted "Monday Night Football" matchup on ESPN and a deciding game in the baseball playoffs appeared to steal some viewers from broadcast TV Monday. Several shows, including "Hawaii Five-0," "The Event" and "House," dipped significantly compared to last week. ABC and "Dancing With the Stars," however, escaped relatively unscathed.

ABC averaged 17.2 million viewers and a 10.9 rating/17 share in households Monday night, pretty close to its totals a week ago. CBS (10.25 million, 6.4/10) was down about a million viewers from last week but still finished second by a good margin over FOX (7.55 million, 4.6/7). NBC came in fourth with 5.6 million people and a 3.5/5, while The CW drew 1.8 million viewers and a 1.2/2.

(Ratings for ESPN's "Monday Night Football" telecast and TBS' baseball coverage will be available later in the day or on Wednesday.)

Adults 18-49 also favored ABC, which scored a 3.8 rating in the demographic. CBS came in second with a 3.4, followed by FOX at 2.7. NBC (1.9) fell below the 2.0 mark but was still a full point better than The CW (0.9).

    Monday hour by hour:

    8 p.m.

ABC: "Dancing With the Stars" (19 million viewers, 12.0/18 households)
    FOX: "House" (9.55 million, 5.7/9)
CBS: "How I Met Your Mother" (8.5 million, 5.1/8)/"Rules of Engagement" (8 million, 4.9/7)
    NBC: "Chuck" (5.35 million, 3.1/5)
    The CW: "90210" (1.8 million, 1.2/2)

30-rock-live-show-320.jpgFast National ratings for Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010

A live episode of "30 Rock" Thursday drew a bigger audience than the show usually gets, but it didn't upset the typical order of things -- which is to say, CBS scored another win.

Led by "The Mentalist," CBS averaged 13.5 million viewers and an 8.3 rating/14 share in households. ABC (8.1 million, 5.4/9) came in second, a little ahead of FOX (7.4 million, 4.5/7). NBC (5.3 million, 3.2/5) was up a bit from last week. A night of repeats on The CW averaged 1.9 million viewers and a 1.2/2.

CBS also topped the adults 18-49 demographic with a 3.3 rating. ABC's 2.9 was good enough for second. NBC, 2.4, edged FOX, 2.3, for third place. The CW posted a 0.7.

    Thursday hour by hour:

    8 p.m.

CBS: "The Big Bang Theory" (12.5 million viewers, 7.5/13 households)/"$#*! My Dad Says" (10.1 million, 6.1/10)

NBC: "Community" (4.8 million, 2.9/5)/"30 Rock" live episode (6.7 million, 4.0/7)

The CW: "The Vampire Diaries" rerun (2 million, 1.3/2)

For once this season, the big four networks enjoyed a night of relative stability on Monday. ABC's "Dancing With the Stars" was off slightly from last week's numbers but still led the night by a wide margin, and most shows on CBS, FOX and NBC were all pretty much in line with their ratings from a week ago.

FOX took third with 7.6 million viewers and a 4.6/7. NBC (5.6 million, 3.5/5) was fourth, while a lineup of repeats on The CW drew 1.05 million viewers and a 0.7/1.

ABC also grabbed the top spot among adults 18-49 with a 3.5 rating. CBS was close behind with a 3.3. FOX came in third in the demographic with a 2.8, followed by NBC at 1.9. The CW averaged 0.5.

TV Ratings Monday: Chuck, The Event Steady Hawaii Five-0 Bests Castle
    By Robert Seidman – October 19, 2010

    CITAZIONE
    image

Led by two hours of Dancing with the Stars, ABC won the night in adults 18-49 and total viewers, ahead of CBS. Like last week there was Monday Night Football and baseball playoff competition on cable. The MNF game isn’t likely to be anywhere near as high-rated as last week’s New York/Minnesota matchup, but last Monday the Yankees weren’t playing and last night they were.

Two and a Half Men dropped 4% to its lowers-rated fall telecast ever, but it was still the night’s top program with adults 18-49 with a 4.3 rating.

The 3.9 adults 18-49 for Dancing with the Stars was its lowest-rated performance show of the fall season.

Chuck and The Event were steady vs. last week’s finals with a 1.9 and 2.2 adults 18-49 rating respectively. Chase was up 0.1 to a 1.6 rating with adults 18-49. FYI to Chuck fans: we have a really unique Chuck giveaway.

Hawaii Five-0 edged out Castle at 10pm with adults 18-49, but as a consolation prize for those rooting for Castle, it had more viewers than H50. Castle was flat vs. last week’s final #s, but Hawaii Five-0′s 2.9 rating was down 6% to its lowest rating yet. Castle could fall a tick in the finals due to Dancing with the Stars overrun.

House was down 0.1 vs. last week’s finals to a 3.5 adults 18-49 rating, and Lie To Me was up a tick to a 2.0 adults 18-49 rating.

Glee, Dancing, Modern Family, Castle Lead Season’s Ratings Gainers, CSI:NY, Lie To Me, House Lead Losers

    By Bill Gorman – October 21, 2010

But what about the ratings trends for individual shows?

Glee leads all shows in both adults 18-49 ratings points gained (2.0), and percentage increase (53%) followed by Dancing with the Stars, Modern Family and Castle.

On the loser side of the equation, CSI:NY, Lie To Me and House trail the pack.

Of course, lots of these shows have changed timeslots which can have a major impact on their ratings. Last year’s similar post didn’t include timeslot changers or unscripted shows, but I decided to pile everybody into this year’s list. Enjoy!
