TV ratings: 'Once Upon a Time' solid again Sunday, NFL scores for NBC

Fast national ratings for Sunday, Nov. 6, 2011

"Once Upon a Time" is proving to be a very consistent performer early in its life on ABC. The show posted solid ratings for the third week in a row Sunday, beating everything that wasn't the Ravens-Steelers game in its timeslot. The news wasn't as good for the rest of ABC's lineup, though, as "Desperate Housewives" was off a bit from last week and "Pan Am" was flat in adults 18-49 and down a tick in viewers.

Elsewhere, "Sunday Night Football" gave NBC another victory for the night, while FOX also got a bump from NFL games bleeding into primetime -- although "Allen Gregory" continued to struggle. CBS was its usual steady self.

NBC led the night with 16.35 million viewers and a 9.8 rating/15 share in households, numbers that will likely rise when its live NFL broadcast is accounted for. FOX (10.9 million, 6.3/9) currently stands in second, but since it had some live football as well, CBS (10.3 million, 6.6/10) could overtake it in the final nationals. ABC drew 7.35 million viewers and a 4.6/7.

The Peacock also dominated the adults 18-49 demographic with a 6.3 rating. FOX is second for now with a 4.6. ABC came in third for the night with a 2.4, and CBS scored a 2.2.

    Sunday hour by hour:

    7 p.m.

FOX: NFL overrun/"The OT" (21.2 million viewers, 12.2/19 households)
    CBS: "60 Minutes" (13.7 million, 8.6/13)
NBC: "Football Night in America" (7.85 million, 4.8/7)
ABC: "Once Upon a Time" rerun (4.1 million, 2.6/4)

    18-49 leader: NFL overrun/"The OT" (8.0)

    8 p.m.

    NBC: "Sunday Night Football" - Ravens-Steelers (19.75 million, 11.7/17)
ABC: "Once Upon a Time" (11.4 million, 6.6/10)
CBS: "The Amazing Race" (10 million, 6.2/9)
FOX: "The Simpsons" (8 million, 4.7/7)/"Allen Gregory" (4.3 million, 2.6/4)

18-49 leader: "Sunday Night Football" (7.4)

    9 p.m.

NBC: "Sunday Night Football" (20 million, 12.1/18)
CBS: "The Good Wife" (9 million, 5.8/8)
ABC: "Desperate Housewives" (8.7 million, 5.5/8)
FOX: "Family Guy" (5.7 million, 3.5/5)/"American Dad" (4.8 million, 2.8/4)

18-49 leader: "Sunday Night Football" (7.8)

    10 p.m.

NBC: "Sunday Night Football" (17.8 million, 10.9/18)
CBS: "CSI: Miami" (8.6 million, 5.8/10)
ABC: "Pan Am" (5.2 million, 3.6/6)

18-49 leader: "Sunday Night Football" (7.5)

'Once Upon a Time' 'Snow Falls' recap: The honorable thing to do

Meredith Jacobs, Queens Primetime TV Examiner

Once Upon a Time continued Sunday night on ABC 7 in Queens with the story of Snow White and Prince Charming in "Snow Falls"—both in fairytale land and Storybrooke.

    Fairytale land

Charming first crossed paths with Snow when she stole a sack of his jewels and promised to find her when she escaped. He did—and he trapped her. She called him "a real Prince Charming," and he promised to release her when she returned his jewels. She had sold them, but he needed a family ring back to give to his fiancée. Though she insisted there was no such thing as love at first sight and knew there was a business end of the marriage, he had his own leverage to get her to agree to his plan: the Queen's Wanted poster for Snow.

Charming took a necklace from Snow's neck, and it held deadly fairy dust. She was saving it for the Queen, who blamed her for ruining her life. She was trying to save up to escape to another realm. Snow did try to make a run for it at a stream, but the Queen's huntsmen grabbed her.

Charming saved her, and after a moment between them, she told him she had sold the jewels to a troll. At the bridge, she took control and told the trolls she wanted to make a new deal: all the money they gave her for the ring. They thought it was a set-up and once they saw the Wanted poster, wanted the reward. Charming fought off the trolls, telling Snow to run. She did, but she returned when he didn't follow, and used her fairy dust to turn the trolls into bugs. Before they set out again, he told her his real name: James.

She returned his ring and he her gold, and when he remarked the ring wasn't her style, she put it on. After a moment, she said he was right and handed it back.

    CITAZIONE
    Snow: "You'll find me."

    Charming: "Always."

Though she knew his name, she insisted on calling him Charming, and she watched him walk away.

    Storybrooke

After a bad first date with Dr. Wile, Mary found Emma crashing in her car. She offered her guestroom up, but Emma said she did better on her own.

Mary's students brought artwork into the patients at the hospital, and Mary found Henry with John Doe. He asked if she knew him, and she was sure she didn't. He later told Emma he found her father: Charming, aka John. He enlisted her help in getting Mary to read to him to help him remember his identity. Emma told Mary they needed to play along to help Henry see reality. Mid-reading about their love, Mary was surprised when John grabbed her hand.

She called in Dr. Wile, who said she might have just imagined it and sent her home before calling Regina. Once home, Mary kept reading the book. At the diner, she told Emma and Henry what happened, and he suggested she read to him again. She was onboard, but when they got to the hospital, they found out John was missing.

Regina was his emergency contact because she found him years ago. She insisted on keeping Henry away from Emma. No one had seen anything, but when they checked the correct security footage, they saw him walking out by himself into the woods.

Graham, Emma, and Mary headed into the woods, and when he went ahead to search, Mary asked how Emma got into looking for people. Henry had mentioned that she was in a similar situation to him (adopted). That was when the young boy showed up to tell them John was looking for Mary. Graham found John's hospital ID—with blood on it.

Mary found John lying underneath the bridge and woke him with a CPR-kiss. He had no idea who he was, but back at the hospital, a distraught woman identified him as David—her husband, as Regina explained.

Catherine thanked Mary for finding David and explained they had been fighting. She had told him he could leave and he did. She thought he left town, but she was going to take advantage of their second chance. When he woke up, his first instinct had been to find something—someone. Before leaving, Henry told Mary she was the one he was looking for because they belong together.

Emma stopped Regina on her way out to say something wasn't right about the story. Regina said they looked at past security tapes and heard David calling out for Catherine, and that was when they began looking. Everything has reminded Regina of how grateful she is to have Henry.

    CITAZIONE
Regina: "Not having someone? Well, that's the worst curse imaginable."

Mary watched David and Catherine hugging, and he obviously saw something in her. She played with the ring on her finger—Charming's ring. Emma showed up at Mary's door, asking to stay in her spare room.

Once Upon a Time continues Sunday nights on ABC 7 in Queens at 8PM. What did you think of "Snow Falls"?

Ratings: Once Upon a Time, Pan Am Hold Steady

There’s not much to see/make noise about here, folks, so we’ll keep this brief.

Now in its third week, ABC’s Once Upon a Time again held up well, dipping just a few percentage points to 11.4 million total viewers and a 3.7 rating. That led the ABC freshman to again top all of Sunday’s non-sports programming in the coveted 18-49 demo (tying with The Simpsons).

And though Desperate Housewives (8.7 mil/2.8) dipped 6 and 10 percent at 9 pm, Pan Am — which just got an order for five additional scripts — at 10 o’clock stayed the course, drawing 5.24 mil while scoring a 1.8 rating.

    Elsewhere on the night:

    * The aforementioned Simpsons (8 million total viewers/3.7 rating) was down 7 percent from its “Treehouse of Horror” demo delivery. Allen Gregory (4.3 mil/2.1) dropped at least 10 percent from its so-so premiere.

    * CBS numbers are a bit scrambled by late starts in 13 percent of the country, but The Amazing Race seems poised to hit an all-time low for a fall telecast. This week’s highly entertaining installment of The Good Wife, however, might wind up with a week-to-week uptick. CSI: Miami, featuring a non-Sopranos-esque Drea de Matteo, was down.

    * NBC’s Sunday Night Football, with a very preliminary and to-be-adjusted tally of some 20 million viewers and a 7.9 rating, is on pace to more or less match last week’s Cowboys-Eagles match-up.

    Written By Robert Seidman

    November 7th, 2011

Opposite Big Sports Competition, ABC Hits a Sunday Season High in Adults 18-34

More than Tripling its Lead-in and Gaining Audience Throughout its Broadcast,

“Once Upon A Time” Finishes as Sunday’s No. 1 Non-Sports Show in Adults 18-49

“Once Upon A Time” Produces Series Highs with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34

Growing Week to Week, ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” Tallies its

Strongest Results in 5 Weeks with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34

ABC’s “Pan Am” Beats CBS’ “CSI: Miami” by a Wide Margin in Adults 18-34

    Sunday Night (7:00-11:00 p.m.)

Facing strong sports-led competition on the evening from another high-rated “Sunday Night Football” contest (Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers) on NBC and Fox’s NFL-overrun (NY Giants-Patriots) fueled lineup, ABC achieved Sunday season highs for the 2nd week running with Adults 18-34 (2.0/5) and Women 18-34 (2.8/7).

    “Once Upon A Time” (8:00-9:00 p.m.)

More than tripling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 8:00 p.m. (+236% - 3.7/9 vs. 1.1/3) and gaining audience throughout its broadcast opposite “Sunday Night Football” and Fox’s NFL-overrun driven animated comedies (“The Simpsons”/”Allen Gregory”), “Once Upon A Time” made ABC the No. 1 non-sports net in its time period for the 3rd week in a row. From 8:00-9:00 p.m., ABC self starter “Once Upon A Time” (3.7/9) beat out CBS’ “Amazing Race” by 42% (2.6/6) and Fox’s football-fueled comedies by an impressive 28% (2.9/7) among Adults 18-49. The new drama series won its time slot outright over “Sunday Night Football” with key Women: W18-34 (4.6/12) and W18-49 (5.0/12).

The new ABC drama stood as Sunday’s No. 1 non-sports program among Adults 18-49 (tied w/”The Simpsons”) and the highest-rated series overall with Women 18-34 and Women 18-49.

“Once Upon A Time” generated substantial year-over-year gains for ABC in the hour, improving its slot by more than 2.0 million viewers (11.4 million vs. 9.3 million) and by 48% in Adults 18-49 (3.7/9 vs. 2.5/6) from the year-ago night (“Home Edition”).

ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” marked series highs with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34, building by 6% and 12% week to week, respectively. The broad-appealing Disney-owned drama was also up week to week with Kids 2-11 (+13%).

    “Desperate Housewives” (9:00-10:00 p.m.)

During the 9 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” (2.8/6) finished No. 2 to “Sunday Night Football” among Adults 18-49, defeating competing drama “The Good Wife” by 33% (2.1/5) and leading CBS in the hour for the 7th week running.

Growing week to week with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34 (3rd straight telecast of growth), ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” posted its highest ratings in 5 weeks on both counts – since 10/2/11.

    “Pan Am” (10:00-11:00 p.m.)

During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s “Pan Am” outdelivered its drama competition by wide margins among key demos, leading CBS’ “CSI: Miami” by 27% with Adults 18-34 (1.4/4 vs. 1.1/3) and by 46% with Women 18-34 (1.9/5 vs. 1.3/3).

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 43% currently, from 38% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Once Upon a Time Review: A Snow White Worth Fighting For

As a young girl, I loved Star Wars because of Princess Leia. At the time, most female characters weren't much more than damsels in distress and that never appealed to me. Even though Leia was held prisoner and needed to be rescued, she soon grabbed a blaster and started fighting right alongside the boys. I was hooked.

Which was probably why I was never a big fan of the Snow White story. She always seemed much too prim and proper to be any fun. I simply never related to the dainty girl Disney showed in the movie. That was, until Once Upon a Time retold her story. "Snow Falls" had me on the edge of my seat and enjoying the ride.

As usual, I loved the way this show threw us into the heart of the fairy tale world. Charming's carriage was fit for a prince with white horses and plush seats. The first surprise was the nagging blonde in the seat across from him. I'd certainly never read about her.

Then were we introduced to Snow White... as a bandit. I didn't see that coming but it made sense. Once the Evil Queen banished her and she wandered the woods, she'd have to fend for herself. But the Snow White I read about was never nearly this spunky.

I loved that she and Charming, as she insisted on calling him, didn't quite get along but the romantic chemistry was definitely there from the beginning. Still, she's stealing from the Queen to survive and he's planning on a loveless marriage for the good of the kingdom. Not exactly the fairy tale I was expecting - and I couldn't be happier about that.

Who needs seven dwarfs when you've got angry trolls?!? This girl's got guts doing business with these guys. They were truly frightening. And instead of the Prince riding in on his white steed to save the damsel in distress, we had Snow White and Prince Charming swapping the rescuing moments between them. I've always preferred equal opportunity heroics.

When the story moved back to Storybrooke, we had Mary Margaret reading to coma patient John Doe per Henry's request. Emma thought she could prove to Henry that his fairy tale musings weren't real. Talk about best laid plans going awry.

I almost expected a happy ending here when they finally found John Doe in the woods. Would he and Mary Margaret finally have their reunion? Not so fast.

Regina swoops in with his wife, the nagging blonde from the carriage. Damn. She's not just a fiance in this realm, she's a wife. Well, that will put a definite crimp in the happy ending, but then again I suppose true love never did run smoothly.

Emma was automatically suspicious, which fit her character well. After years of being John Doe, Regina found his identity and his wife on the day he woke up. That's a heck of a coincidence.

And I loved the way the show continued to play on whether or not Regina knows about the curse. When she got the phone call from the doctor about John Doe waking up, I thought it proved she knew he was Prince Charming. But then they explained that away when she said she found the injured John Doe years ago and became his emergency contact. Too coincidental? Yes, but also plausible. And why would the doctor lie to Mary Margaret about what he saw on the monitors? So again, it's anyone's guess how much the illustrious Mayor knows about Storybrooke and it's residents' alter egos.

We didn't get a lot of Emma this week and as much as I like her, I didn't mind. Snow White, the character I had the least interest in two weeks ago, held her own and then some. Heck, I was so enthralled by her story that, for the first time ever, I can't wait to learn more.

'Once Upon A Time' Recap: 'Snow Falls'

November 9th, 2011 7:06am EST | By: Melanie Linn Gutowski

In this episode, we learn Prince Charming's real name as well as how he and Snow White first met. The Storybrooke characters make a major stride in breaking the Evil Queen's spell.

We begin episode three in Fairy Tale Land, on a woodland lane. Prince Charming and his vapid girlfriend ride in a carriage down the lane. Suddenly, there's a disturbance - a tree down in the middle of the road; Charming realizes it's been purposely cut. Just then, a hooded rider swoops in, steals Charming's jewelry pouch and gallops off. Charming gives chase and finds that the ambusher is none other than Snow White. She gets away, but not before leaving a scar on Charming's chin. “Wherever you are, I will find you!” he yells.

    ---

Mary Margaret Blanchard is on a date at Granny's Diner, but her beau is too busy ogling Ruby to pay attention. On her way home, Mary Margaret runs into Emma Swan and offers her a place to stay.

In the hospital, Henry and his classmates are at the hospital where Miss Blanchard volunteers. Henry realizes that "John Doe," the coma patient we saw in episode one, is actually Prince Charming. Later, he gets Emma to help him convince Miss Blanchard to read his storybook to Doe. Miss Blanchard agrees and begins reading to John Doe that evening.

As she reaches the end of the story of Snow White, John Doe places his hand on hers. Mary runs to get a doctor (the doc turns out to have been her blind date from earlier in the episode), who lies and tells her she was imagining things - the hospital machinery didn’t register the brain activity changes.

After Mary leaves, the doctor makes a call to Mayor Regina Mills, as he was instructed to do if there was ever a change in John Doe's condition and reports that it was Mary Margaret who saw his response.

    ---

Back in the woods, Snow White is caught in a trap Charming has set. He demands his jewelry pouch back, explaining that an heirloom ring was inside that he'd planned to give to his fiancée. He indicates that the marriage isn’t true love, but would be an advantageous "merger."

He reveals that he knows who Snow White really is – her image is on Wanted posters "for crimes against the Queen: MURDER, TREASON, TREACHERY." – and says he will turn her in if she does not cooperate. He releases Snow from the trap.

    ---

At Granny's Diner with Emma and Henry, Mary Margaret reports what happened in the hospital and that the doctor said she imagined it. The three immediately return to the hospital to continue reading, but they run into Sheriff Graham, who says that John Doe is missing. They see the Mayor standing in Doe's hospital room, next to his empty bed, with evidence that his IVs were ripped out.

Regina explains that she is John Doe’s emergency contact, claiming she found him on the side of the road years ago. Regina vows to keep Emma away from Henry. She orders Graham to find John Doe.

In the hospital security office, Emma, Sheriff Graham and Mary Margaret review surveillance tapes of the ward. They see that Doe got up and walked out of the hospital, through a door that leads to the woods four hours earlier.

    ---

As Charming and Snow make their way through the woods, she explains that the charges against her are false, and that the Queen's huntsman was sent to rip her heart out.

Snow reveals that the Queen blames Snow for ruining her life. As they stop near a riverbank, Snow suddenly attacks Charming, shoving him into the river, grabbing items from his bag and running off. She is stopped by some of the Queen's henchmen, who are out to murder her.

In the forest, Charming rescues Snow from the Queen’s henchmen. Snow leads Charming to the trolls to whom she sold his jewels. When the trolls show themselves, Snow gives them their gold in exchange for the heirloom ring. The trolls, suspecting a setup, restrain Snow and Charming, discovering the wanted poster in Charming's bag. Snow uses evil fairy dust she’d been carrying to turn the trolls into insects. Charming reveals that his real name is James.

    ---

Back in the forest, Mary Margaret, Emma, Henry and Sheriff Graham find John Doe lying in a creek. They drag him out and Mary Margaret begins performing CPR on him. He awakens, but doesn't remember who he is and is rushed back to the hospital. Shortly after his arrival, a woman rushes in who looks exactly like Prince Charming's fiancée.

    ---

Snow gives Charming back the recovered jewelry pouch; he gives her the gold. Charming again vows to always find her.

    ---

Regina claims that John Doe's real name is David Nolan and that the woman who rushed in is his wife. She didn't know that he was in the hospital in a coma because they'd had a rough patch and she told him he could leave if he wanted to.

Emma, doubting the story, confronts Regina about the details. Regina reveals that they went back through old surveillance tape and discovered John Doe talking in his sleep, mentioning a "Catherine."

In the final scene, Emma takes Mary Margaret up on her offer of a place to stay. We notice that Mary Margaret somehow has the ring Prince Charming wanted back in Fairy Tale Land.

-Why does no one but Henry seem to age in Storybrooke?
-Where did the "Once Upon a Time" book come from? How did Miss Blanchard get it?

After watching this episode for the fifth time now, I'm impressed by the makeup department and the good job they did on covering up Ginnifer's eye injury.

Also, I see that ABC may be preempting OUAT on 20 Nov for another music awards show. And I guess that is why they are listing episode 7 (the magical one) for an airing date of 11 Dec.
