'Once Upon a Time' 'Fruit of the Poisonous Tree' Recap: Sydney’s Identity

    January 29, 2012 11:00 PM EST

In last week's Once Upon a Time "7:15 A.M.," Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) finally reunited as Mary Margaret and David. But that's basically beside the point in "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." They're still sneaking off to have a picnic by the river, but the story instead turns to the story of the Evil Queen Regina (Lana Parrilla). Of course, this is a piece of the puzzle, because somehow Snow White took something from the Evil Queen, and that's why there's no more happy endings in Storybrooke -- but it seemed to stop the overall storyline by rewinding yet again.

Even so, this piece of the Once Upon a Time puzzle was intriguing, because the fairy tale identity of disgraced reporter Sydney Glass (Giancarlo Esposito) is finally revealed. And he isn't who fans thought he would be.

    Emma resorts to illegal means

The mayor is finally taking things too far, and Emma (Jennifer Morrison) decides to stick up for Henry (Jared Gilmore) by finding an ally in Sydney Glass. The mayor had Henry's "castle" destroyed after the storm knocked most of it down. In doing so, Henry's fairy tale book has disappeared from the sand. (Turns out, the mysterious stranger [Eion Bailey] has it).

Through Sydney, Emma learns that Regina took $50,000 from the town's budget on Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." Sydney thinks this is what they need to expose the mayor for who she really is -- someone willing to destroy what people love. Emma ends up giving in to Sydney's demands, and breaks into and bugs the mayor's office. With some new intel, Emma learns the Mayor is meeting someone with a final payment. But who? After Emma's brakes are cut, she nearly doesn't discover that Emma is buying a piece of land from Mr. Gold (Robert Carlyle). But she does, and she's ready to use this illegally obtained info to prove to the town that the Mayor is ruthless and that she's using town funds to build a lavish, second home.

But she's not. It's a playground for the children of Storybrooke. Emma is disgraced, and now the mayor has forbidden her from seeing Henry. Plus, Emma may think she has a new ally now in Sydney Glass, but she doesn't. The mayor is working with Sydney, but are Sydney's affections really being returned? Or is the mayor using him, just as she uses everyone?

Who is Sydney Glass in the Once Upon a Time fairy tale?

Sydney begins as the genie in the bottle, until a king gives him his freedom. He then joins the king at court and decides not to use his last wish, which the king has given him. After all, every wish always has unexpected consequences.

The genie befriends the unhappy Queen Regina, for he understands the queen's desire to be free of the court and the king. After all, the king can't love her like he loves Snow and his first wife. As a gift, the genie gives Regina a mirror, "So you can see yourself, the way I see you."

When the king traps the queen in her bedroom, the genie delivers a box to the queen. It's a viper. She claims she is going to end her life -- but the genie stops her, and decides to kill the king for her instead. All it takes is one bite, and the king is dead.

But the queen has framed the genie on Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree." She never loved the genie, she claims with tears in her eyes. The genie doesn't accept this though and refuses to run away. He uses his one last wish: "I wish to be with you forever, to look upon your face always, to never leave your side." With that one wish, he's forever trapped in the Evil Queen's mirror.

What did you think of Sydney Glass's fairy tale story? Did you wish that Once Upon a Time "Fruit of the Poisonous Tree" had focused more on Snow White and Prince Charming again? Or did you like this insight into Regina's past?
